How bad

    93 heritage 1340 what are the steps you would take to find out just how bad you've blown up your motor. thought i'd ask and see what everyone comes up with before i tear into mine

    All depends what the symptoms are, how many miles, and if the engine had already been rebuilt before. I've heard some say the blew up their engine and its only a top-end rebuild they need, whereas others truly do blow the engine (launching parts, dumping oil, the works). At a certain point I would opt for a remanufactured or new engine altogether.

    Wish ya lots of luck... Not sure if there is anything you can do except to start tearing into it and find out exactly how much damage there is... I agree with the earlier post as well. Is there oil leaking, etc??? (Could be a complete rebuild)... My best regards...:)

    well problem started with left the gas on during work( didn't think about shutting it off) had a hard time starting bike rode it about 4 miles and stopped for traffic it started to make a strange noise kinda like a rod knock so shut it off pulled dipstick and smelled the gas and had to walk home :cussing: went back with fresh oil changed it but still had same noise when i started it so trailered it home still :cussing: started to tear into it pulled the primary cover off and found what looked like white sludge up by the jackshaft and gun metal sludge in the bottom of primary so pulled off inner primary since i needed to change gaskets anyways next i took off oil filter and noticed what looked like small metal shavings ( checked with a magnet ) yes they were next i popped off rocker box cover and found the same white looking sludge in top i tried turning the main shaft over to see if there was any play in it but couldn't feel any countershft spocket looks a little worn figuer thats where the metal sludge in primary came from. I just did an oil change not to long ago i'd say maybe a month and did not ride it much changed primary oil about the same time. i was wondering if i should pull the heads off and check further or if there is any thing else i should check first thanks for the reply's oh by the way bike has about 60,000 miles and has s&s hot kit (heads ,cam, carb V&S long shots ) bike was running great before all this **** happened now all i wanna do is :puke:

    well , white sludge in the oil is from water , gas will not turn oil white , so you have a leak somewhere or someone at work screwed you over , with all the problums your haveing & at 60k best to rebuiled cam's & cylderers(sp) can be saved most of the time so new bearning's & rings & a gasket set & soem hour's of your time & in no time your in the wind

    I previously saw a bike have the same sludge you described but the guy got off easy... relatively speaking. Turned out he only needed to rebuild his top end and the bottom end was spared. Only thing was he had to tear most of it down just to clean things out. With his engine the oil had become saturated with gas washing the cylinder walls to the point that the rings and piston skirts tore up the walls. The lower end survived.

    Long story short, new pistons, rings, cylinders, valve guides, and a massive cleaning job, and all was well. He replaced all the cam bearings just to be safe but never had to do anything in the bottom. He has probably put on another 40,000 miles since without any problems.

    Only a thorough inspection will tell you how bad it really is. My heart goes out to you man, that really sucks.

    another thing to check it the oilpump.....it should be slick mirror smooth....if not a build there would be needed.....

    thanks for all the advice I finally tore the top end off and checked the rods front bearings gone south so looks like I'm in for a total rebuild dam and the weathers just getting nice plus gonna miss laughlin river run well need to start ordering parts cause i'll be dammed if i'm gonna miss Sturgis this year again thanks for all the comments. May you ride on wide open roads and leave all the *******s well behind ya ride safe

    Bummer,my bottom end went bad,but I was lucky it was at the end of riding season here in Mich,Hope you get it done so you can catch some wind this riding season.

    how much play

    ok so started to tear into motor and found i have a bad lifter which in turn took out my cam next question is how much play is too much on front rod (side to side ) play there is no up and down play and i took a magnet and ran it down into the bottom of the case just to see if there was any metal chips from the bearing . didnt find any so was wondering if there should be any play in front rod ? rear one ( the forked one) has no movement side to side. I'm still hopeful and probably pressing my luck but hey what the heck

    side to side is normal, as long as it is not excessive.....up and down is what you need to check....and check it throughout the the revolution. i dont remember the specs, but your service manual will tell ya. thanks for posting what ya found........keep us up to date!!

    Not sure if I'll be much help,but the no up and down is a good thing..My sportty has some side to side,but it's a 75,sure the newer big bikes are different,Be a good idea to invest in a manual:cheers:

    hey ya'll just thought i'd do an update on my motor tore it down and found that i tore up a lifter and my cam everything else seems to be ok. went an bought a cam and lifters off e-bay (gotta love it ) paid next to nothing for them and started to put motor back together today so hopefuly will be in the wind soon just hope the temp drops down a little this 116 deg is some hot **** and not to much fun to ride in. looks like i might make sturgis after all. So with all that said i would like to thank everyone with the comments that were left will update when i have a few miles on the motor as to how its running Thanks again all Kools20
