Heard about that some years ago. Apparently that region was a major trade route in times since before Christ. The villagers were sick of being at the mercy of whatever slaver or warlord was passing through the area and created this as a redoubt to hide in until the invaders had passed. Knowledge of its existence was forgotten over the centuries. Imagine how much of this kind of thing exists hidden from the world. Even some of the things unearthed in relatively recent areas of civilization are amazing, I seem to recall a shipwreck under a New York street recently and awaiting the results of a possible U boat found in a northern Canadian river.
The world is a pretty neat place sometimes. I wonder if there will be some H-Ds unearthed next century by our descendants!

There are a bunch of buried ships around Manhattan. They were used as full as the island was expanded over the years. Long Island waters have many ship wrecks. Some from UBoat torpedoes.
