I assume you are talking about for the Shovel? I would think that anything over 230* I would be worried.

230 is not that Hot, SE 110 was running at 300 when we were in Vegas. If you touch anything that is 230 it may burn you. The Shovel should run 185 to 220 from what I've been told.

That's the temp range I've been told too...that would be a little hot on the hand...lol...
Your new rebuild will run a little hotter anyway until everything seats in then it should cool down a bit...

I said that I would be worried, not that the bike would go into catastrophic failure. 110 cubic inches. That is a lot of engine. I would hope that that bike could handle more heat. I go crazy when I see my Sportster go past 200* which has only happened once. Unmolested Shovelheads are what 74 Cubic Inches?

Here is a question. Does it get this hot with ordinary riding while you are moving or parade like conditions?

Shovels came in 74"& 80".... The hand isn't a very good temperature gauge...180* is pretty damn hot for you to touch...try it sometime with a pot of water on the stove before it boils...tell me how you made out:roflmao:

So was I incorrect by saying that 230* would give one good cause to worry? I was told that if my Sportster got up to 210-215* that there would be cause for concern. No thanks on the stove thang.....:roflmao::roflmao:

110cu motors don't run no hotter than a normal twin cam
And if it's 100* outside yer engine will run 230*
In traffic it can git hotter

I wouldn't want my bike gittin over 285*

Dude please the new bikes are designed to run hot with the way the oil is cooling it. Go talk to a Harkey mechanic on a 100 F day they will all be over 240 except for you of course.

On our trip to AZ it was 105 in Vegas when we pulled in and I still had that cat in the head pipe. I looked like Chester with his leg sticking out, only on the other side. Oil temp hit 300F when I checked it. We were all over heating in the city traffic so pulled over in some shad and shut em down for awhile. Mobile 1 SYN held up pretty well as did the Amsoil the other guys were running.

Little Johnny better have a good oil cooler on his bike when he does his trip to Nevada.

I have found one that looks pretty good. Not too sure about the price but if it saves the engine it will be well worth it. Check the Vendor Section.

great debate fellers...just what i was looking for.

i am sure i wasn't over 180*-200*. i will laser it next time for accurate info.

    considering an oil cooler anyway.

yes, it is a wopping 74" with 275 miles on it, so i was expecting a lil temp.

If that was the temp then I wouldn't worry about it so much. There are times that my Sportster doesn't even reach 190*
