    Hi All,
I have a 2006 sporty 1200xl. I recently installed a set of vance and hines short shorts and the stage 1 tuner kit. The bike rides great now except from idle. If the bike is given a little throttle it will stall. I have to give it a lot to keep it from stalling. I put in a 46 and 185 like the paper work said and backed the mixture screw out 2 1/8 turns. I like the way it runs through the gears but how can I solve the idle issue without taking it in to a shop.

a 46 pilot should be good. It could be the accelerator pump that is going bad. I had that problem when I bought my 96 Sportster. A place to start at least.

Not sure if the carbs on the 06's are the same but should be able to take it out from the bottom of the carb. The diaphragm could be cracked, the spring worn etc. Do you have a Shop Manual for your bike?

I removed the diaphram and it was shredded around the bottom edge. I will repost when I put a new one on.

So I changed the ac diaphragm and the bike runs great at operating speeds. It still wont idle correctly. It idles fine for about 30 seconds then kicks down into a low idle and wants to stall. Could the jets be wrong?

Anytime an engine changes idle speed without any input (throttle, choke, or change in vacuum) the cause is often not the carburetor itself. The carb is mechanical and unlike similar carbs on Kawasaki's there isn't any electronic choke or throttle position that would change the idle on it's own.

Since you have mentioned replacing the accelerator pump diaphragm you should verify that you are getting a squirt out the nozzle when rolling the throttle. You should see this even with the engine off. If not there could be debris from the old disintegrated diaphragm clogging the passage. There is also a flat o-ring/washer (or 2 on some models) between the acc cover that must be in place for fuel to be delivered to the accelerator nozzle.

Double check the vacuum hose for fit, along with the manifold boot where the carb spigot slides onto. Any leaks will cause erratic behavior (in the bike, not you :p)

Last but not least check the Needle Jet (nozzle) that it did not fall out when replacing the emulsion tube, or if it came out that it was installed in the correct direction, wide-mouth end facing up into the carburetor throat.

Thanks for the ideas. When I changed the emulsion tube the needle jet did not come out. While twisting the throttle with the bike off I do see a squirt of fuel comming out of the nozzle. I am thinking it may be a vacume leak? The vacume hose seems to be on correctly as does the carb. What is the best way to check for vacume leaks?
    Dishearted but thankful

With the bike running, use an unlit propane torch (gas valve on) and go around critical sealed area's. If engine speed increases in any given spot, there is your leak.
