    I drive a 73 Honda CB 750.
And as of lately it has been idling high. it will start at 1200 rpm and increase up to 3000 rpm.

What could be the cause of this? I'd like to do the job myself instead of bringing the bike in.

Make sure your choke is disengaging all the way.
Make sure your timing has not changed on you.
    Check throttle-cables for binding.
When was the last time the carburetors were synchronized ?

I got a mechanic to check the synch and he says it sounds fine.
I will look at the binding issue.

ALSO, check the return spring strength, it might be no longer adequate, or just plain streched out...

a leaky intake will cause the idling problem also. could be as the engine warms up, the leak gets a bit bigger, and as it cools off it gets smaller. just a thought

    high idle

Make sure your choke&cable going to it are functioning properly.Another thing to check is the float levels(a little more involved)--could possibly be too high.Sorry I should have mentioned the throttle cable also.As with anything mechanical check all easy to get at stuff first.Sometimes on older bikes the throttle shafts running through the carbs. body become worn & hang up...causing idle speeds to not return to normal.good luck!!!!!!
