Ok, I'm an idiot...I'm trying to change my primary fluid and I'm not sure exactly where to put it in. I have it drained and the derby cover off...I'm just not exactly sure how to fill it! Help!

I don't know the year and model of your bike But my 02 softail likes 26oz right in the derby cover hole should bring it up so the chain is running in it. I guess some just dump the whole quart in but my book says 26oz. Joe

As long as it's in the chain I think your OK. I know that I saw a story on doing this in Hot BIke. See if you can pick that article up on the Web.

Please go out and get the service manual! I is the best tool you can buy and covers 99.9% of your questions. You can save yourself some grief that way.

Diaphragm models run best when you use enough oil to just touch the clutch diaphragm with the bike on the kick stand.

to make it easier to add, I used the bottle from some gear lube I'd used up, cut the bottom off and use it for a funnel. The small pointy tip will fit in between the clutch hub and the primary cover...nice and clean.

If you have a big twin, it should take a quart of oil. They give a small range since there may be slight casting differences, but the first time I added my own, it took a full quart and ever since then, I just dump one full quart in the primary...rarely do I hear anyone doing differently.

open the inspection cover, not the derby

Open the inspection cover, not the derby cover, the fluid should just come to the very top of the opening without leaking out, that should be enough fluid, thats what I have always done and its what I was taught by several wrench heads to do,
    hope this helps

That is the way I was taught as well, but don't have the bike on the side stand. Just thought I'd clarify ;)

Your NOT an idot but like CD said get a service manual. It has pictures and step by step instructions.
I remember the first time I drained the engine oil on my first Harley. Woops, I drained the tranny and had no Tranny oil at home. I went to the local HD shop, bought tranny oil and a service manual, best investment I ever did when owning a Harley.

Only thing wong with your question is the lack of model and year, however as it's been said above it's a simple proceedure, pouring oil down through the derby opening on a Twin cam is harder, not much room.

Easier to open the inspection cover (unless you have a 06 Dyna where the cover doesn't exist anymore)

26 oz of primary fluid or HD Syn3 is a good fluid, syns are good because when you use them the clutches tend to release better, and no it's not slipperyer than regular primary oil. LOL

My 03 Road King service manual says "remove the clutch inspection cover from the primary chaincase cover. Pour 32 ounces of chaincase lubricant through the clutch inspection cover opening."

yep...get the manual. Mine is gonna run my 58.00 at the dealer, but will pay for itself. I do my own work, so it definitely helps out alot.
