I recently removed the carb on my TC 88 2000 Heritage. I got rid of the straight pipes with no baffles and replaced them with Vance and Hines straight shots with stock baffles. It already had Screaming Eagle air filter kit. I Cleaned the carb and then used CV rebuild kit. Note: it had been previously modified by other owner. So, I removed the adjustable needle and what looked like dyno jet emulsion tube, 190 main jet and 46 idle jet. I then installed the entire stage one kit using 195 main and 48 idle jet per chart in instructions. Had to put in a new slide from HD due to mine previously being drilled too large. At same time, I installed the CV EZ idle mixture screw kit. Re-installed carb on bike and tuned per instructions. Bike runs good. No pop, no backfire, no hesitation and idles fine at 3 turns out. Only issue is it is using way too much gas. Rode 27 miles and used almost 1/4 tank of gas. If I dial idle mixture screw back 1/4 turn, I lose mid range power/pull. Any suggestions?

I would drop the main jet to 190 and check for a vacuum leak around the manifold. 3 turns out on the EZ-Just when combined with a 48 pilot really sounds like a vacuum leak is causing the need for excess fuel to compensate.

Also make sure the needle jet is in place and right side up. This part is commonly removed when Dynojet kits are installed. See item #2 in the below link.

Thanks. I will try that. Took the bike out this morning for ride and it was way fat. Condensation on the bottom of carb, ez adjust screw and manifold where carb mounts. It is getting about 38 miles per gallon and I think it should be about 45-48 mpg. I will bet that the pilot jet is missing. Also note: the emulsion tube that was in there only had one or two holes in it vs. the one that came with the kit I replaced it with had many.

Right, the Dynojet emulsion tube has fewer holes as it is designed to mix differently. Those holes draw in air that mix inside the tube with the fuel being drawn upward from the bowl. The stainless steel needle jet (nozzle) sits on top of the emulsion tube but may have been removed when the Dynojet tube was installed. Without the jet/nozzle fuel sprays into the carburetor throat erratically. As the needle lifts out of this jet fuel is correctly metered and sprayed out in a mist, but without or if upside down fuel just spits or bubbles out.

I used my propane torch to check for vac leaks at idle and there are no signs of change in idle. Did it on both sides of bike from as many angles as I could get it in. Then, took apart carb. The needle jet was in there and in the correct position. Put the 190 main jet in. 1 3/4 turns out. Runs about the same as it did but without the gas smell at stop signs/at idle. I will ride it for a few days and see what kind of mpg I get. Just thought it would have more punch than it does.

Also went out on open road, did full throttle test and when rolling off a bit from full it does not gain speed which is good right?

Rode a good 400 miles up in New Hampshire and Maine this past week since putting the 190 main jet as you prescribed. Fine tuned the idle mixture screw out another 1/4 turn to 2 full turns out. Runs great. No smell of gas. Plenty of pull and got about 42 miles per gallon. All good. Thanks for your help on this.
