Just installed the stage one kit and v-ductor, 185 main, Ken's needle and emulsion tube, 46 pilot. Starting and idle is good (except for very little response from finger operated (very nice to use) fuel mixture screw,) off idle response is good, cruise is good but full throttle power feels way down, struggles to reach 5000 RPM, just doesn't feel like it pulls hard at all. Checked CV diaphragm all is good and slide moves freely. Any help or suggestions. BTW, it's a 1996 Dyna Convertible with a 1340 EVO with V&H open pipes.

What kind of pipes do you have? You may be too rich at WOT so perhaps going down to a 180 would be best.

Also make sure the needle jet (stainless steel nozzle) is in place or not installed upside down. That will cause acceleration problems too.

    Thanks for your help Ken.

Vance and Hynes pipes, don't exactly know what model but they are short unbaffled pipes. Had 190 main jet and needle on lowest clip with 3 washers underneath, 45 pilot jet in before stage 1 kit. Now it's 185 main and 46 pilot. Spark plugs are bright white clean on insulator.

Is the needle jet (stainless steel nozzle) you're talking about located under the emulsion tube?

Didn't get any response from the idle mixture screw with 45 pilot nor with 46 pilot jet. Could it be that I need to go down to 44 pilot jet?

There are no stumbling or drivability problems with acceleration just a noticable drop in power at full throttle.

No baffles & short pipes will cause the top end WOT to fall off some , try some baffles in there & see if that helps even the old pop cycle trick type should do the trick

WOT used to be great before I installed the stage 1 kit and v-ductor. Pipes cannot be changed as owner of the bike wants them as they are.

The pilot jet would not be the cause because after 3/4 throttle the carb is running only on the main jet circuit.

Yes, the needle jet (nozzle) is that stainless steel busing the protrudes up into the carb throat, held in place atop the emulsion tube end... or under depending which way you are looking. If it was taken out and then put back in backward it would spray an erratic fuel mist pattern that would be very evident at full throttle.

In some cases an Evo can take a 190 main jet under just the right conditions such as very efficient exhaust scavenging. More often though the need for a larger main jet is required when there is a vacuum leak at the manifold flanges or VOES, in which case the fatter jetting is compensating.

If you find the need for a larger jet let me know and I'll get them out to you.

If the owner doesn’t want baffles then I’d try some torque cones in the exhaust.

My kit is here and I'm going to install it this weekend. TC88, '06 FLST I have a feeling that tuning is going to be a bit of a challenge due to the altitude here of 6,000'. Ken, any recommendations regarding the elevation before I get started? I have Supertrapp X-Pipes on it and a Screamin' Eagle air cleaner assembly. Thanks in advance.

IF the bike seems to be hitting a wall at 5K
then back the main off one size again,

If the engine is stock other than breather and pipes then
the factory main jet is usually more than sufficient...
there is no EPA rule for WOT...

I would start with fixing one thing, do the main jet, take
it down a size until you fix that problem...

Ok, so how does having a too big of a pilot affect gas mileage??? Because I have noticed that since I have increased my pilot, but left them main jet stock, I am getting the worst gas milage????

Yes that and the wrong needle
    poor fuel,
    driving style,
    differences in filling tank

You should average mileage over a few tanks not just one,

What do you mean by differences in filling tank???

The pilot jet is only delivering fuel at idle and just off idle so any difference in fuel usage with that change alone would only come into play if you idle quite a bit. Other conditions typically add to increased fuel use, such as a chock (enrichener) plunger not closing or seating, having the mixture screw turned out too rich, or a missing needle jet (that stainless steel piece mentioned on this site before). Usually a jump in fuel usage will be accompanied by fouled plugs as a good indicator that a rich condition exists.

Of course there is always the other usual suspects like weak spark from a bad plug or wire, timing, etc. But if only one thing has changed check the above mentioned items first.

yeah I guess I am not going to mess with it now because the bike is going to be going into the shop soon to get its beefing job. Should I leave the carb setting for now and then go from there or should I put Kens kit in right away after getting the other work done??

By filling I mean that one time you get more gas in the tank than the other, say you fill it up and the valve shuts off shy of a full fill maybe a 1/4 gallon, then you go ride, and get
an almost full to the rim fill, when you calculate, you end up with less miles on the tank and use greater gas to determine the mileage...

So you go out, do 90 miles because the previous fill was short, but put enough in to go 110 miles on the re-fill. Mileage looks bad, so you need to average it.. These tanks are small, so filling to the exact same point each time would be crucial to do a one tank check...

Most times outside of improperly tuned, the right wrist is a big factor in mileage LOL

I've run into a new problem, the bike seems to lose power when cruising and does quite a bit of missing and backfiring but it only does this occasionally every now and then.

I live at 6,000 ft also, I have one ken's complete carbs on my wife’s bike and I have parts from ken in the carb on my bike. Both are tc88's both are jetted the same 45 pilot and a 190 main (which is stock). My wife constantly gets 5 or 6 MPG's better than me, she is probably a little softer on the throttle than I am. There is a V-Ductor on each carb also. The best tuners come from altitude because it takes more finesse.
