thinkin maybe my intake gasket(s) may be leakin. runing lean, farting out through intake, worse when its cold. seems my front exhaust is pulling crap in, instead of out. does this sound like time for the WD-40? any thoughts on this? only seems to act up at lower RPM range

Yes it does...worth a try ,at least you could rule the intake out if it isn't leaking...

Yep, good time to try the WD-40 trick & here's one that's even better - if gou've got a small propane bottle such as you'd use for soldering, open the valve on it a little bit & pass the tip (don't light it) around where the intake manifold meets the heads & where the carb goes onto the manifold, while the engine's running. If the idle changes suddenly, you just found a leak. Not as messy as spraying WD-40 or carb-cleaner like "Gumout" although both will work.

    art,

it's efi, tough to get around where the intake meets the head. tried it, but can't be sure i'm hitting it well. another problem could be a fuel feed thing. had a simular problem when my outlet to the efi unit wasn't right. but it wasn't farting through the trottle body then. any ideas:confused:

I'm not much help with the EFI, but to the best of my knowledge, God hasn't changed the laws of physics ;) If there is an intake leak, either where the manifold meets the heads or where the throttle body meets the intake, it should show up real quick. I like the propane bottle trick the best, but WD-40 or carb-cleaner will work too. When in doubt, just take the manifold off & replace all the gaskets. Yeah, I know you didn't want to hear that ;)

have it apart. oilly seems i've been running with to high a oil level. would oil cause the intake gaskets to fail? wonder what it does to the sensors?

Wish I could answer definitively - can't, but too much oil definitely ain't good & wierd things happen.

Hard to say for sure, but the ones that came on my 2000 model Sportster I haven't changed yet & it's been years since I changed the ones on my '95. Didn't even write that down in the maintenance book.

well if replacing the intake gaskets don't work i'll have to think hard about the the PC III:eek: . now in retrospect i wish i would have try cutting it out. might be doing things the hard way:witsend: well least i'm doing it myself so i can afford to make mistakes. imagine if i'd let the steeler do this, bet when all would be said and done i'd be looking at around $1500-2000 by the time they'd get done with me: downloads, dyno, racetuner, labor:brick:

I'd doubt overfilling with oil got your mess up at the intake, that would have to be a ton of oil and by that time the motor'd be swamped and unable to run.

I'd say you have a bad intake gasket/seal.

It's a wonder the darn things work anyway with the 45 degree angle, that grows up and out while it heats up.

A good set of gaskets will help eliminate that problem, carb or EFI.

yes it could have a faulty tssm/tsm can in fact interfere with the way the bike runs. can even cause it not to start. the tssm/tsm costs around $420.00. according to the helpful guy(really was) at the steelership. they can't be fixed and once a new one is installed the stealer has to set it up. i'll be doing some research into this matter keep you guys posted. just wondering... does anyone else have a fuel injected bike out there?

well i tried disconecting the pciii, still run about the same, so then i doused it out (the conectors) with some ether, then blew it out with compressed air. put it back together; runs much better, i'm probley at about 85% of where i want to be. thinking i'll get the other 15% by going through tssm password reseting process and changing the plugs. i'll never give up, or take my bike to the steeler and get the olde:brick: i'll never learn by going to the steeler or by hiding my head in the sand when it comes to EFI, it's here, and it's here to stay. i will learn it:devil:

good luck with this... i like your determination, i'm sure you want it running right. with efi it seems like it could be a million things. did you mention the top end is wet? wonder if it's fuel like a injector stuck open. if it's oil, i guess that's something else/

    Intake seals

hello guys. This is my first time to post. I have read severl things on replacing intake seals, are they very difficult to change? I tried the wd-40 and stalls engine or kills it completely so they need replacing. Is this somthing i need to tackle myself or should shop do it? also jp cycles offers blue silicone seals or the black rubber ones which do you recommend blue ones or 31.00 bucks black ones 5 bucks are blue ones worth the difference? any feedback will help Thanks

Skull, sorry I didnt see this earlier, but it looks like your bike is an 06 correct, If it is I bet you still have the 8 degree injectors, they had gobs of problems with them and then had a service bulletin to switch to 25 degree injectors and most of the dealers picked up the bill even if it was out of warranty because they had runnability problems cold blooded stalling coughing etc, If you havent had them switched or checked that could definetly be your problem if you need service bulletin numbers let me know I will try to dig them up, I will try to find a link to tell the injectors apart.
