I do hope someone out there has had some experience removing the starter Bendix and Starter Gear on the 1975 xlch sportster...I have removed the solenoid...starter..battery box..primary cover and the bendix actuator lever/arm and see No way to remove these items other than removing the Entire clutch and Basket assembly...Any experience with this issue would be greatly appreciated !! :banghead:

Someone will chime in that knows how. If you have a service manual, it should tell you, step by step, how to remove and reassemble just about anything on your bike. If you don't have one - get one - it's the best tool in your toolbox. BTW, welcome to bike talk dirty hands.

I hope someone that knows replies too !!! I have a clymer and a factory HD ( although its a 70-74) service manual for the Ironhead and neither addresses that..or if they do I'm missing it somewhere...however I have 3 different service manuals that I use for my collection of vintage Yamaha 500 singles ..1 for my Bonneville 750..2 for my Speedmaster and find myself at times needing 3 manuals for one model to thoroughly address specific issues..So as u can see I do have manuals here to refer to if all else fails...I'll resort to reading one. I've had the same assembly out of my 78 1/2 Shovel a couple of times without any issues...It appears that the only way to get it out of the Ironhead is by removing the clutch basket and I am trying to see if I could possibly do it without removing the clutch basket which would save me from making up the necessary pullers...Thanks

OK...I was looking for a quick way out...as usual....well..I knew there Likely wasn't one....however I did find a shortcut :: I drilled a piece of flat bar with two holes to stradle/compress the clutch and used 2 primary bolts to secure it...backed off the primary chain adjuster..removed the clutch springs...removed the flatbar and after moving the clutch basket away from its seat about an inch or so I was able to remove the bendix and gear without removing the chain..crankshaft nut Or anything else..
