Jam nut seriously jammed please help

    I have a big problem with the jam nut on my clutch adjuster (08 FLHR) Its seriously jammed!! I can't back it off no matter how I try - I've tried the offset box wrench 11/16 against an allen key in the screw adjuster with no luck. Is there any way to get this off? I'm at the point where I'm considering cutting the thing off with a dremel tool but I'm afraid I'll end up cutting the threads of the adjuster screw - so if I do bugger up the adjuster screw is it a matters of just backing it out to replace it and a new nut?

    is it cross treaded, if not it should break lose. the dremel tool don't sound good:confused:

    Does it have loctite on it? if it does, especially red, it will require a little heat and should come loose, Todd

    OK,

    If its jammed tight,

    Loosen the clutch cable adjuster all the way or at least until it's really loose behind the front wheel, that takes the pressure off the clutch system

    Then get an 11/16 tall socket, put a wrench on it and give it a hard move to break loose the whole adjuster screw, this should then turn the nut and screw together and you can take the whole two parts out.

    If it's welded or loctited with red locktite etc a little heat to the area from a torch will melt the locktite

    In any even once you get the nut turning with the inside adjuster screw just back it out and see if you can turn it or, pull both out and replace if you can't get them apart.

    please be carefull applying the heat......the oil WILL burn...................
    but a fireextinguiser will put it out quickly......and do no damage.........................:)

    could try to use some of that bolt loosener spray, could also be that the threads are not right hand and your tightening it.

    LOL Hey Chuck I guess I should have said some heat when it's off the bike in a vise....

    All he needs to do is put a socket wrench on it and loosen, if the clutch pack is properly tightened he should be able to get it moved or he can pop it quickly with a rubber mallet (wrench handle) and it will loosen before the pack will turn, or an impact wrench will help.

    on the heating thang I have resorted to a good soldering gun applied to the area it takes a little bit but no fires (discovered it on a lazy day):D

    Done - had to pull the release plate (i.e take of the snap ring) and the whole piece (plate, screw, nut) popped out no problem. The nut came off in the vise though no amount of "dead blows" wrenching ect could release it when attached to the clutch basket. Doing it this way (pulling the plate) was quicker, easier and probably safer than pounding the and wrenching the hell out of the nut.

    BE careful doing it that way, you can bust the thin aluminum ridge that holds the snap ring if it's under pressure, that's one reason I said you should unload the pressure at the cable adjuster behind the front wheel.

    Yeh I quess popped out wasn't the right worked cause I actually had to pull it out cause fortuanetly I did release the pressure with the cable - good to know that that's an issue though - crap that would have sucked had it broken.
