    Hi,
I have just bought a spike air cleaner for my 2002 883 spotster. I have 2" straight through pipes, that come out of engine and curve straight down toward the road. (can't remember what they are called !!) My carb is a standard CV, so can anyone advise me what i need to do to the carb, for the bike to run right. It is not on the road yet, but i would like to rejet the carb myself ready for the road, but not sure what jets etc need changing, and to what size ? I got told that i need a full Dyna Jet kit, to use this air filter, which is quite expensive for me, but also told elsewhere, that i can just replace a couple of jets !! Any advice will be appreciated.

Well your choice in pipes was not the best for performance ! But we will try to help you out . Do not buy a jet kit from dyno jet! The cv carb can be jetted just fine . 45 and a 180 will be on the rich side but you have quite a lot of flow with such a short set of pipes your going to have to feed it fuel . If the main at 180 . Is to much back it down to 170 and try it once again but with the fuel you have over the pond a 180 main might be just fine . Do not mess with the needle till you get the main jetting correct . Adjust your air fuel screw 2 turns out with the 45 slow jet and ride it see if it does not cough out of th carb. Adjust it as needed 1/4 turn at a time. Good luck . Short strait pipes are hard for tunning low end rpm .

Which air cleaner did you get? I have a D&M Custom Cycles Spike Air Cleaner and it was spendy and it is on my 1996 Sportster that was originally an 883. I also had similar pipes on it, they were a Radii Vipers. Since you have similar pipes to what I was running, I would suggest that you put baffles in them as well. The jetting, I would try a 44 pilot and a 170 main. IN an 883 the stock pilot is a 42.

Thanks, the pipes i have are called "Curvado". Not sure what make the air cleaner is, as there is no brand on it. It is a used item, as i'm trying to keep the cost down, but it is a good solid item, not a cheap job !! I would like to keep the baffles out if possible.

From experience and a lot of getting my nuts in a sling from the graybeards on this site, it really is better if you add baffles. There are baffles out there that are made not take sound away really, but to provide the needed back pressure which will enhance the performance of your bike. It is your bike and do what it is that you want but your bike will just never feel right until there are some baffles installed. Please look at this web page, you owe it to yourself and your bike to at least look. Big City Thunder Home of the Thunder Monster Baffles

Thans for your advice. I'm not too up on the technical side of things, like back pressures etc. The only reason for not having baffles, is for the sound, but if i need them for the bike to run good, then i'll put them in. How about the exhaust cones that fit into the headers, are these any use at all ? Sorry to sound so thick, but this is where i value yall your opinions and help !!

I have never used the torque cones that you are talking about and I hear only mixed reviews on them. One of the graybeards will chime in I am sure and they could tell you more about them but baffles are a pretty good and inexpensive fix. I used a pair of those BCT in my Radii Vipers and they made a big difference.

Just looked at the exhaust cones, and they say they help to increase back pressure, that is lost when fitting larger radius pipes

Yes, that is what they claim but I have no real experience with them. Ask a little more about them. Start a different thread thats title is Torque Cones???

All the cones go is slow the exhaust down a little there a tapered pipe so to speak , I have not run them but know one guy who has he swears by them but he's also on his Thered engine rebuild , the big city baffles are a better bang for the buck

What do you mean "graybeards":fight: it's platinum blonde:roflmao:

    I've never seen a company advertise..."buy my product...it won't help any,but buy it anyway"

They won't make a bad exhaust system good, any benefit(if any) from them is so small, they're not worth the money...IMO...
A set of baffles would be a better buy than torque cones...but not as good as a good exhaust system...

NRHS tried a set in a stock exhaust....here's the link...
