Jetting ideas?

    Hey everyone! New to the Forums so hello to all....I have a 97 XLH1200 stock except for a K&N air cleaner element in the stock housing and Screamin' Eagle II exhaust de-baffled. Bike is running lean as my spark plug electrodes are pure white and excessive coughing through the carburetor especially when cold. Have held back on the throttle since she's running so lean. Can anyone suggest a good starting point for jetting? Current set up is 42/170 and seems way too lean. Thanks in advance for you input...

    Welcome to the forum. Your jetting looks closer to that of a XL883 than a 1200. I recommend following the jetting table in the instructions of the kit ordered but based just on what you've described I would probably aim for a 44/175 combo. The kit includes a jet size higher but this will get you in range. Remember that bigger isn't always better when it comes to jetting.

    Unbaffled mufflers can make tuning more difficult so I recommend trying to add something to the exhaust path to break up any reversion. This could be as simple as drilling a hole from the underside of the muffler (or using the original baffle screw hole) and passing a large eye-hook through the the inside, then secure with a nut on the outside. You can turn the screw so when perpendicular to the flow acts to interrupt sonic waves from heading back up the pipe. You would be surprised how such a simple device could make such a big difference in performance. You'll still have big sound.

    Put together two "lollipops" today and will install them when the rain clears and see what happens. I've read about increased torque and better low end driveability so we shall see. Still want to do the Stage 1 regardless

    Yes the "lollipops" will help the low end torque that often is lost when removing the baffles. You may even like the sound better. Definitely you still want to perform the tuning as the baffle fix won't change your fuel mixture.

    Ok Ken, this morning I ordered the Stage 1 kit, a full rebuild kit, a new accelerator pump kit and of course...the V-Ductor! I'm going to totally redo my fuel system by rebuilding the carb, replacing my intake gaskets and flushing the tank and line and I hope this gets me running 100% with a kittle fine tuning. The current jetting IS factory spec 42/170 according to Harley's service manul for a 1200. I'm going to follow your advice and start out with a 44/175 setup and tune from there. I do have a question...if I install the lollipops and they work well would using torque cones be of any benefit or would that be overkill?

    The torque cones are more for when your headpipes are too large. If you are running stock headpipes then the cones won't help much. If your running a 2 inch or larger head pipes then the torque cones will help.
