New Dyna has 96 CUI motor in the frame easily upgraded to 103
also has the new cruise drive 6speed, lots of other add on bits

There has never been a better time price wise to buy a new HD,
however the trade value on your 04 will be lower lots on the market

You could try and sell yourself and shop the prices, you should be able to get a dyna at or under MSRP out the door.

What hotroadking said is the way I think.....You can sell it for a heap more than you will get on trade.!!!!!!!!!!

I use it all the time, have every year, of course the 96 is way smaller than the 124 I'm used to riding so I now have to re-evaulate passing more than one car at a time.

By 2012 that bike will be wortha lot less on the market, not that you care, nor that its important, however the new bikes have a lot of upgrades to suspension, frames, gearing, trans, motor, cams, for example the horrible tensioner setup on the older twin cams is gone on the new bikes and the oil pump system is improved, longer lasting.

At Daytona we saw a few dynas 03 era for sale in the $8000 range with custom wheels, etc very nice looking bikes and nothing wrong with that.

You can ride that bike a long time, nothing is wrong with doing that, but if you have the funds and credit and can get the new bike, your job/income is secure there is no better time to replace the bike.

I got my 09 RG well UNDER msrp, so it's like payback for the times that dealers were over MSRP.

I'd bet you'll get a great deal later in the year on a new one as well, this economy will not improve as quickly as it dropped, but it will.

Me, I'd rather be on a 3 year old 09 in 2012 and have had two years of warranty coverage.

My 00 is still going but it takes a lot of care and parts, to fix things and it's technology has already been passed by, but Its a carb bike and I do like it too, just different.

Test ride a new one, see if it rings your bell...

That is a complicated question as there are so many variables to the answer some of which you have already read.
I really like my 09 with the 6 speed trans. the 96 engine for extra power, the new frame, ABS brakes are great plus all the other new functions. Yet, my o1Springer is an absolute joy with its older system with a carb. Its only a 5 speed which really works fine and don't seem to need a 6th gear. The bike is more fun than I can explain. If I had a bike that I really enjoyed and it was older I'd probably stick with it. If there wasn't that enjoyment anymore then I'd think about a new one.

It's your bike... Do what you think is the right thing to do... I agree with Chuck, don't really quite care for the newer bikes. In fact, I don't quite care for the Twinkies...:)

Tough call. I looked at moving up to an Ultra but there is waaaay to much difference in dollars to swing it. I could try to sell it privately but that's a whole 'nother story. The extended warranty will help a private sale but you'll get nothing on a trade 'cause the dealer wants to make the money putting a warranty on it. My bike is an '04 as well, Electra Glide I just had the cam tensioners done on the extended warranty last fall. The bike runs really sweet, got a buncha rock chips on it and memories to last a lifetime, I'd feel like a real creep to get rid of it...been a really good bike, maybe if it starts getting fussy but for now mine stays. The new ones are nice and if you got lots of green you can stimulate the economy by getting a new one. I'm not sold on the six speed yet..for my application anyway. The 96 has a longer stroke than my 95, more piston speed. I had a bit of a bad experience with a stroker in the past so I'm a bit nervous there. The 96 is peppy though, you'll like it but a well planned 95 in your bike will be lots of fun for a whole lot less money and this is going to sound really dumb, your bike is your friend, you establish a relationship with it. Sometimes you treat it better than most humans, sometimes it treats you better than most humans do, a lot of times it's more dependable than most humans. get out there and try the new one and then take the old one out for a blast..you'll know then.

I would keep the 04, and buy the 09 what the heck your still gonna have payments, your still gonna cuss whether you keep it or sell it, you will enjoy a having another ride for just incase. and you won't get what it's worth on trade anyway

    dollars

money means nothing to you ,,,,buy,,,but ,,remember,,,you WILL want as many extras on new bike as you have now ,,,or want now,,,i will keep mine,,,put baker 6 speed and gear drive in ,,,also back to carb,,,just put a 95 kit in ,,,that WILL out perform factory 96 all day,,,and i do not have to take to dyno ,,,for more bucks,,, so i am looking at around 2000,, for baker,,490 for gears,,, 720 for carb,,, and have same thin you will have stock,,,but mine is paid for ,,,and do not have to add anythin more,,, my 95 was a trade deal ,,,so cost nothing ,,,but you can get one installed in your bike in winter when dealers are hurting for 900,,, and the baker IS better than harleys,,,6 speed ,,, i have 50000 on it and looked it over other day,,,looked new,,, than again,,,i am not much for chrome or show,,,i do not even have exaust shields,,,gets a little hot at stop streets and the desert,,,but oh well,,,,pops

i heard the 2004 glide has trouble with the cam chain tensioner or something like that at 40,000 miles. is this true?

They will wear, some bikes wear quicker than others. If you're keeping the bike you can get them to pull the cam chest cover off and look at the tensioners, unless you want to do it yourself. I had them pull mine and the tensioners were over 50 per cent worn so they changed them out for the price of the deductable. If they're not worn to the point of needing to be changed the work performed is more than likely on your dime.

If you have 40K and haven't checked them you need to do so,

Pull exhaust, get a new cam cover gasket,
Pull the cam cover it's just a bunch of allen bolts.

Inspect the tensioner shoes I'd bet you are way deep into them at least 50% by now if not more. If it cracks and falls apart which they do when they get too far gone, you end up with bits running all through the bike in the oil. Not good.

I went out today and Rode the 01 Springer (no Jobs) and it is a definite keeper. I just hope the economy picks up a bit so I don't have to sell her, man 3-400 a week is really hurting right now.

    Gallery post

    For dennis

I just noticed your post on my gallery back on Mar 15th and don't know if your still up in the air about swapping your 04. As for your questions I love the Kerker mufflers and they were very reasonable and sound real good and go along with my overall power scheme. Which involved the PC3 and the cams and high-flow air intake. I went with the different cam for a little more low end torque and find my 88 to have great pull all the way through the rpm's and only thing that suffered was mpg (might have to do with right hand having a mind of it's own!)
When comparing my 06 to 09 only thing I might change as stated before is the 5-speed to a 6-speed tranny just for the highway miles, but for me my job is secure and payments wouldn't be a problem but I'd be stayin with my 06 JMO

thanks,i decided to keep my 04 glide until my extended warr; is up in dec; 2010. then maybe a new sportster 883L OR A honda st 1300. i like the idea of the electric windshield , up when its cold or raining or down when its to hot at the push of a button. to bad harley does not have this feature. then again honda st 1300 does not have electronic cruise control like harley. well i have two years and unlimited miles left on warr; to decide what to do !
