I own a 1997 Harley Dyna Low Rider, 1340 cc engine. I noticed some thick liquid leaking from the bottom of the push rod cover where a wire or cable goes into the underside of the cover. It's not oil, but almost like melted plastic. It's sticky. Anyone have an idea what it is and how I can fix it. The bike starts up and runs fine, but I did notice a noise or vibration coming from that side last time I rode it.

    Thanks

Can you post a pic?? They're wouldn't be any wires or cables going into the pushrod tubes...but there would be a cable in the cam cover going to the ignition pick up sensor...

Yeah the only "wire" would be the spring under the center cap that is part of the retention
system for the pushrod covers, there is a metal flat spacer the spring sits on and a rubber o-ring. Nothing inside that would "melt"

OK looks like he is meaning cam cover not pushrod cover

    Now that makes sense...

I tried to post a picture but it was to big, so I'll try it againg with my phone and see what happens...I think it's the cam cover...it says V2 on it. Where that wire is going in is where the liquid is coming from.

Yep...Ignition pick up is under it(V2 cover)...plastic coating covers the contacts, when it melts...sensor is on the way out....R&R time....;)

I think you are right, I never could get any pictures posted, but something is definately melting. Do you have any ideas where I can get a replacement part. I live in Central Florida. I can probably replace it myself.

    Thanks

Ok, now that I know what it is I have to replace it. Do I drill out the rivets that hold that small round cover on, or do I use an alan wrench to take off the whole cover. I have all the tools to do either one.

Drill the rivets...The cam cover is part of the structure and supports the cam...bad juju if you take that off without releasing the valve spring pressure off the cam and pushrods...Don't replace the rivets with regular hardware store rivets, the one's in the cover now are closed on the inside, regular rivets have a little ball on the end and could get in with your ignition when you pop the rivet...you can use 8/32 screws if you tap the rivet holes in the plate that's under the V2 cover...you'll see when you take it off...:) The rivets in there now are HD part number 8699
