With Hooker rebels, K&N filter CV carb with stage 1,pilot 46#and main 185#,air fuel 2 and 1/8 out I'll get a light popping out the pipes. not a bang light popping. is that telling me i'm lean on the main? That happens on decel not at steady speeds.any thought would be great

To expand on what Cowboy said, most likely intake manifold leak. With the engine running, spray a little WD-40 or carb cleaner around where the carb meets the manifold & where the manifold meets the heads - if the idle changes suddenly, you just found a leak, as the engine will suck the flammable spray in & make the mixture too rich for a moment. If that's not it, check the exhaust, as air getting in thru a bad joint can cause popping on decel too.

Are you running baffles? when I installed my baffles in my 85 fxrs with drag pipes it just about totally eliminated the popping, Todd

yes there are baffles in them,I have the stock backing plate that I cut the bottom out so I can get at the air fuel screw without taking the air cleaner off. could it be getting too much air?

If you are running baffles then I would also check for intake leaks, does it start hard? is it very cold blooded? I dont think it is possible to get to much air, also like Art said a exhaust leak sucking in cold in can do that too. Todd

speaking on the exhaust side....be sure the clamps are tight....the only clamps worth a crap are the harley clamps....torqued to specs. after market clamps wont hold the torque spec required to seal up the exhaust.....

Check the gaskets at the heads where exhaust pipe goes in. One or both are leaking.

I agree with Art, good trick with the spray, and it works! I learned that trick back when I worked at a real gas station, when we still cleaned the window, pumped your gas, checked your oil, ext, and people paid with cash. I remember working sundays, and 30 bikers would pull in, fill they tanks with High Test, and leave 50 cents on the top of the pump.

I agree with chucktx I was having the same problem, bought new Harley clamps, I had a small leak from the slip on pipe to the header from the clamp, removed exhaust cleaned the pipe and inside exhaust ran a bead of Copper Permatex inside drag pipe and re-clamped to the proper specs 45-60 lbs. No more problems.
