I should have it out of the bike over the next few days and ready to ship. Hoping to find someone I can trust to do a good job and to do it in a timely fashion. Not sure exactly whats wrong with it other than not wanting to shift into 1st gear. There may be other issues.

There is a guy on the other side of N.C. who works on them but he is really slow. It took nearly 4 months to get my heads rebuilt. Thanks, guys.

So if it takes you 3 months to fix it ,you're a month ahead of the game;)

When you take it out Josh, why don't you open it up and take a peek, might be something you can fix yourself with a manual and some patience,You're 100% sure it's not the clutch,or the rocker system you're fitting to it??
If it's a loose or bent fork, you should be able to see that...

I agree with Lucifer. That's IF you have the manual. Trannys seem scary until you open them up. First one I got into was my 1981 Suzuki GS1100 engine/tranny. I had the book and all went well in replacing a couple of gears.

MIght as well take a look yourself, not going to hurt much.

Check with Baker, perhaps they offer a rebuild kit or service.

I wouldn't hesitate to send Baker a transmission

Well, I pulled the tranny, cleaned it up and took off the lid. The 1st & 2nd gear shifter fork is bent very little, maybe a few thousands, but the problem was that it was loose.

Tony and I looked it over carefully today. It wasn't put together correctly, just like all the other crappy workmanship I had to deal with concerning all the stuff that was wrong with the motor and oil pump. So now it's the tranny, the final frontier.
I ordered new shifter forks, shims, hats, a nut & locking washer set, a new set of lid screws because the allen heads were beginning to round out, lid gasket, and a shifter fork gauge. Tony says he will buy the gauge from me after we use it on my tranny. If I need to use it again, I can always borrow it LOL. Actually, I'm going to give it to him for helping me out.

We'll put it all back together and see how it goes. After having the transmission out for a while and looking it over, it doesn't seem to be too bad. The gears and other parts look pretty good for an older piece of machinery.

And if this is all that's wrong with it, and we fix it, I should be riding in about a week and a half from now - not 3 months!

Probably ought to mention that since I put the rocker clutch in, I had to modify the right side forward control so the foot pegs would be about the same distance out. If I can remember how to post pics, I will put a few on the forum.

Now, the brake pedal is behind the footpeg instead of in front of it, which called for an extensive amount of surgery on it. I have a total extension of the footpegs of about 3", plus about an inch lower. I expect it will take some getting used to .

Waiting on parts now. Here's a few shots of the modified right side forward control and the rocker clutch, which also required extensive changes. Tranny is still out of bike so things aren't all together yet. 003 (640x480).jpg 004 (640x480).jpg 007 (640x480).jpg

You definitely did a lot of work to mount the rocker clutch and brake pedal, first time I've ever seen one vertical and pedal in front of peg...

No way do I ever want to go back to a Suside Clutch.
Mousetrap eliminator was the way to go even back then.

The rocker was more trouble than it was worth. I ended up not liking it and found it far worse than the suicide set up I had originally. I took some of the pieces of the rocker and modified them back to the suicide clutch set up. I built a whole new bracket and cut the back part of the pedal off and reshaped it to roughly match the right side brake pedal . Also had to lengthen the rod that attaches to the release arm.
Footpegs sit 3" farther out from the stock FXST controls and 2" lower. Much better. I've some welding and painting to do yet.

While the bike was down, I lowered the front end 2". Before I started messing with the forward controls, I took it for a couple of rides. Rocker clutch really sucked, but the tranny shifts much better after the top end rebuild. The ol' scoot handles much quicker in the curves now with the lowered front end (no lean resistance). The bike sits level now and the stance looks much better.
