This thread is inspired by Cardboard’s thread http://bike-talk.com/forum/pull-up-...egarding-pollution-control-devices-calif.html
, but seeing how it takes off in its own direction I decided to start this new thread in Tech Talk.

I’m all for fighting against laws that restrict the freedom of letting a person customize and ride their motorcycle. I also can also see the point of view from the others, especially when you see a rider “racking off” his pipes and racing around trying to call as much attention to himself as possible because he knows how “Cool” that everyone else thinks that he is. The general consciences is if you can’t make a law to fix stupid, make one to shut him up.

Years ago I used to have a small sticker that Said “Loud Pipes Save Lives”. But as the world is changing to a world of political correctness and no tolerance of what some people see as an invasion of personal space, my views are changing to maybe meet them in the middle. If we are not willing to give a little then they are going to win, because the way they present it is. “We (them) are not invading them (us) in any way, BUT they (us) are destroying our harmonious world with loud noise and have even caused some of us to spill our cappuccino on our saintly robes). BIG whooptiy friki’n Do!!!!!!

It’s a battle that we can’t win, but if we can keep the noise down to a mild communication of power that can be tolerated by most people, THEN the A$$holes that are pushing to take our pipes don’t win either. You may not like it but I think it’s better than repeatedly trying to explain, “yes it running” or “no, this is really how a Harley sounds with stock pipes”.Sorry about all that just had to blow off a little steam.

Now with all that being said I run Vance & Hines Long Shot pipes with baffles, I really like the performance and looks but would like to quite it down without killing the performance. I have thought about making longer baffles with smaller louvers and wrapping the baffle with fiberglass like a glass-pak. Has anyone tried this? Or are there any other ideas that do not involve changing the pipes.

We've been discussing this for a long time on a few other boards
and I have a set of bassani pro streets that will rip your ears off,
they are off the bike. Way to loud (even though I think it sound bitchi'n)

Fact is there are a lot more not loud pipes people and not bike people
in the world, they vote and we can loose.

Best to keep it midrange at the most, don't rap the pipes all the time and be courteous
I've seen people with windows down plug their ears when I go by with the stock pipe RG thinking it's going to be loud...

We keep it up and stock will be all you will have as an option as they run the companies that make the stuff out of business.

BTW click here and watch South Parks commentary show on loud harley riders

Frankly I think it's funny as heck and pretty much on the mark...

Another reason I use Supertrapps. you can adjust the sound to a degree with disc.

I go into a lot of neighborhoods even out in the country.
And the Home owners association has a sign at the entrance saying.
    Motorcycles with LOUD pipes prohibited.
They will take yer tag number and call the sheriff at once and go and file charges against you.

Don' t know how true it is , but I've heard by 2013 they are talkin about making it so you can't change yer pipes or tuner.

KNow right now EPA regulations is on bikes form 2006 forward.

The future is gonna scare me..

Cardboard, This might be a stupid question but I’ve not worked with adjustable exhuast. With the Supertraps does the sound and performance go down proportionally? If it as quite as stock does it pretty much run like it has stock mufflers?

I love pipes that make power..thunderheaders, pro pipes..had 'em my bikes in the past and was looking at the supertrapp as an option for this bike. Supertrapps are adjustable so you can adjust the amount of back pressure by the amount of discs you put on the end of the pipe..I had supertrapp staggered duals on my old FXR..worked pretty good. i'm still running the stock mufflers on the Electra Glide..trying the 95 inch upgrade over the 88..it's not too snappy as such but no one is burning our garage down trying to keep the neighborhood quiet. I'm not thrilled that a bunch of donkeys making a bunch of noise like some of the fags on Southpark are having the public make life miserable for us.

I'm not a big fan of most of their shows but you have to admit
it is exactly the way that most non motorcyclists feel about loud pipes.

and I've had some loud suckers on the 124 and a bigger engine, with bigger carb and flowing more air makes a ton of noise!

Its like the less disc you have in the more power you have down low and the quieter the noise is.
But if you start buildin yer bike you need to put more disc in it and it lets more air out makin more power and changing the power band toward the top end and the louder it gits when you twist the throttle.
    I like 2in1 pipes.......
