Should be a fun trip, either way would be good, I'd go up WI and ferry back that way you get a little rest on the return when you need it vs on the way up.

HD seats from 09 and up are pretty good they have the HD hammock and it really helps
I kept the stock seat on my 09 RG and never replaced it long 2000 mile rides and never a sore butt.

Unless you are looking for a custom look seat and just want something you
can toss on for long rides check the classifieds on harley boards for a take off seat
from an ultra classic for 09 and up, should fit and it will give you a very nice seat
at well below custom seat prices.

Lot of guys take them off and get corbins or mustang etc

If you want a nice seat that is comfortable and aftermarket but
not super expensive get a Mustang with a removable backrest

BTW with a trip this long you should get the backrest
its worth every penny on 500 plus mile days, especially
toward the end of the trip..

Good advice. If I had any good sense, I'd do the same LOL.

HRK gives good advice. Have a mustang on 01 softail. Have been on up to 9 - 10 hours, no sore butt. But when tour pack on pillion and I have it is a backrest, really see the difference when its not there.... all the difference in the world on full day rides...
