Just installed Stage 1 kit on my '97 Heritage Springer, I used the #46 idle and the #185 main. Bike has stock type exhaust with baffles removed and exhaust tips in place, stock air cleaner with k&n filter. Can't seem to get my hands around the air cleaner to get a screw driver to the mixture screw. So after several times of on, off, on, off with the air cleaner the adjustments I made on the mixture screw do not have any effect on the idle. I have gone from all the way in to 4 turns out with no change on idle quality. The bike idles and revs fine from about 1 1/2 turns out to 4. All the way in it pops back through the carb.

You can leave the mixture around 1-1/2 turns out and check your plugs in a few hundred miles. If the plugs look slightly fouled then you may need to back down a half turn or switch to a #45 pilot jet. Lightly tan colored plugs are good. Be sure to inspect the plugs now so you have a basis for checking later. It would be even better to start with a new set of plugs before logging some miles.

Ken, should I change to the 45 and try or run the miles first? I've adjusted mixture screws on Holley carbs and mixture controls on small airplanes, should I be looking for the same type stumble or is it more subtle on the CV?

Chucktx and Ken, On a '97 big twin can you get your hands behind a stock air cleaner housing to adjust the EZ screw?

Thank you both for the help,
    Byron

You can try the #45 and go from there. The stumble when adjusting mixture can be subtle but if you have the idle adjusted low enough you can usually get it to stall when turned in all the way.

If you have a cross-over pipe on your bike's exhaust then it can be tough to adjust the mixture. If its just not possible to get at the screw, do the adjustment without the aircleaner but keep your face away from the carb in case it backfires. Maybe secure a piece of cheesecloth over the carb mouth to keep anything from getting sucked in. Make the adjustment toward the leaner side (inward is lean) since the aircleaner restriction will slightly richen the mixture once installed. Personally I would make the adjustment to find the point just beyond the stumble, then add only an extra 1/8th turn outward, reinstall the airbox and log some miles. If you get any coughs off idle (after the warm-up) then add another 1/8th turn outward.

Let me know if this helps.

Ken, Guess I need to re-read to section in the instructions that tell us to get familiar with the mixture screw before installing back on the bike. My screwdriver was catching on the groove in the threads where the mixture screw is located. Turns out, I was starting at about 3 turns out.

I ended up at just over 2 turns out and the bike runs GREAT!!! Rode a couple of hundred miles over the weekend, around town it is way more responsive and on the highway it doesn't have to labor to keep up with 70 and 80 mph traffic.

Thanks for the kit and the help
