    Motion and Induced Blindness

    VERY INTERESTING....
    READ THIS FIRST...
It works exactly like it says, and is one major reason people in cars can 'look right at you' (when you're on a motorcycle or bicycle)---AND NOT SEE YOU.

    From a former Naval Aviator:

This is a great illustration of what we were taught about scanning outside the cockpit when I went through training back in the '50s.

We were told to scan the horizon for a short distance, stop momentarily, and repeat the process.

I can remember being told why this was the most effective technique to locate other aircraft. It was emphasized (repeatedly) to NOT fix your gaze for more than a couple of seconds on any single object. The instructors, some of whom were WWII veterans with years of experience, instructed us to continually "keep our eyes moving and our head on a swivel" because this was the best way to survive, not only in combat, but from peacetime hazards (like a midair collision) as well.

That's pretty cool. Even if you fix your stare on one of the solid dots, the others seem to disappear...

If you was color blind like me you'd be suprised at how much more you see.
I see movement a little faster.

Facinating! So, while riding, it would be better not to fixate on something too long, though I tend to watch the road ahead pretty steady. I think most of us do that just for survival. But with cagers, that's a whole other thing. I think they just don't pay enough attention to driving . . .

Don't fixate but rather scan from side to side and center. In other words keeps looking around and don't fixate.

There is a tiny blind spot in everyones eyesight. Just the way our eyes are made. If you stare straight out and bring your finger from outside your periphal vision very slowly across into your vision you may see your finger disappear. When done right. With cagers you gotta add in the survival instinct. Anything smaller than you is not a threat so the mind pays little or no attention to it (bikes). Its the facts!

Cars dont pull out in front of semi's any where near the number of times they do to bikes. It's the fear(threat) factor. Just the way it is.

They do that to ANYBODY here on an almost daily basis. Don't matter what you drive. I've lived in a lot of places but N.C. drivers are the worst - I don't know how some of these idiots got their licenses.

Josh, it does not matter where you live the mental attitude of today's drivers is the same across the country. Large cities are by far the worse. :(

It's like being in a combat zone in the bigger cities.:cussing:
