Battery may still not have enough to turn it over. Bad battery or a bad charging system.

If that gets it started replace battery. Invest in battery maintainer. Harley's must have strong batts

Yea, but I question why did it go dead when he was out riding it. Should have been doing some charging. But I know a bad battery can cause all kinds of fun.

First thing I would check is to make sure it is even charging when running at over a thousand RPM.

You should see about 12.5-13 Volts when at 1k rpm then when you roll on it it should be about 14.5. IF you are getting that, then check regulator.

I would pull the battery and take it to an autoparts store like Advance or Pepboys etc let them do a load test, probably find the battery is bad...

You know as well as I that 3-4 years on a mc battery that did not have a maintainer has given its best years of its life.
