Went to head out at 8am and bike wouldn't start. I was like "what the heck?" On switch was on but no nothing from the start button. I just sat there completely baffled for a moment. I was ready to push start it if necessary. Then I remembered, it hit me...ahhhh its got to be in neutral to start,whewww. I vaguely remember reading that somewhere. And thats wicked new for HD in my experience.

In my defense I been riding HD for 36+ years. I'm use to the rodeo ride when kicking or starting in gear, lol. I'm guessing thats a good feature? I know Suzuki had a similar deal in there Intruder line but with the kickstand and that was problematic when the bikes got older.

My dear mother-in-law, who lives with us, came to me one day and said her car wouldn't start. She always comes to me when things mechanical go haywire. Well, I tried starting it and it wouldn't start for me, either. I'm checking the battery, loose connections, etc., and Mac the Wife comes out and asks me what's up. I tell her and she says, "Did you try to start it in 'park'?". I looked at the shifter and it was in neutral. Doh!

I always start mine with the clutch pulled in whether in neutral or not. If it's in neutral I get zero bang when putting it in first. It's so quiet I have to feather the clutch just to see if it went in gear.

I always and without fail(accept yesterday morning) put it in neutral.

That shifting clunk is a soothing and familiar sound to me. If its doesn't clunk I'd get nervous.

Mine being a kickstart, I must have it in neutral to start it, as it is mighty inconvenient to hold the clutch in. I use neutral a lot to save wear & tear on the throwout bearing at stoplights, etc.

That one got me some years back when I had a Yamaha V Star. Tried to start the bike - nothing happened. Same issue, will not start if in gear. I remain pretty sure I did not leave it in gear, so assume some kids messed about with it. Took me a few minutes to work it out.

I always start mine with the clutch pulled in even when in neutral. But can see why Josh has to start in neutral. Would be a funny sight seeing him trying to pull the clutch handle in and then trying to kick start it at the same time.
