Getting older sux...I guess all the years of bad posture, leaning towards the computer screen and other chit is catching up with me...Went to my surgeon about 7 weeks ago...I respect him and have stayed with him because he does not perform surgery unless he has to, is a no BS guy and tells it like it is...He has operated on me 4x over the last 12 years...Anyway I wanted to confirm a left rotator cuff tear (right one was repaired 10 years ago, similar symptoms) and complain about neck movement pain...We talked and had 2 MRI's the following week...The left rotator cuff is torn and will be surgically repaired next Monday which was no surprise...My real concern was my neck...He said the C6 and C7 joints or whatever the hell you call them are pinching a nerve which is most likely causing the pain...He said a lot of this can be corrected with a lot PT which I have been doing every day and I go to the PT center 2 times a week...The improvement is incredible but I am not where I want to be yet and I know this takes time to fix but I am thinking worst case scenario...The surgery as I understand requires fusion of the 2 C6 C7 what ever you call them which scares the chit out of me...I don't like the idea of screwing around with my neck/back...My question is have any of you or a friend had this procedure and what were the results? I would appreciate any feedback...

    Thanks

I have herniated disc's in both c-6 &7 found by MRI 3 years ago. Terrible pain and numbness going down arm and into fingers. Got a cortizone shot into c-7 3 years ago and it worked for me. Do some stretches I learned at PT and am careful about how I do somethings at work which caused the problem. Have been good since. My doctor hoped shot or shots would work because surgery is last ditch effort.

I've got friends and family that have have fusion done. It all comes down to the surgeon and the patients individual biology. Some very successful some so so and some with constant pain. I'm sorry to hear you've got that problem. Investigate the docs available to you intensely. Best wishes bro

Next step after the rotator cuff surgery is an epidural in the spine which will reduce the inflammation and make the PT more effective...I'm more than willing to exercise 15-20 minutes a day the rest of my life...Sure as hell is better than going under the knife...

Check around and find a high quality chiropractor, one that will do xrays
review and work with you to help with the PT, my daughter was being
sold the surgical route for her back problems from a car wreck she was in so much pain she couldn't stand, my Chiro took her in and in a few months had her fixed up
she's been pain free for 10 years and no knives... no pain pills.

A few years back I ruptured my disc between L5-S1 (base of back). My back got so bad that one day while out of town with my wife my back locked and I couldn't get out of my truck.

I went through many different treatments including PT, chiropractic, hormone and cortisone shots, some hardcore pain killers.

I went for a surgical consult and the surgeon actually recommended I try one more thing first... an epidural. So I went for an epidural where they injected something (don't remember what) into my spine. This didn't do much for me but before giving in to surgery the doctor asked that I undergo a deeper form of epidural. Instead of an in-office procedure this was in a surgical environment where they put me under and injected deep into my spine. Sounds worse than it was.

This last epidural worked great. Within a couple of weeks I could climb stairs again and not have to work at standing up from a chair. It's been about 4 years and while my back is not perfect this sure beat surgery.

Chiropractor, exercise & diet has helped me a lot, though I haven't been to see him since last summer. Broke my back twice in the same area (C7,C9) and also have scoliosis of the spine and low bone density, all from a previous lifestyle of bad diet and debauchery . I have a certain amount of pain all the time and I notice than when I start eating badly the pain gradually gets worse. Try to avoid the blade at all costs - it isn't always successful - and you could end up worse.

Cut out white sugar & white flour products from your diet. Eat more raw veggies instead, or "green" drinks or fresh carrot juice. No caffeine. No junk food. Cut back on meat, alcohol. Excercise, take walks. These things have worked for me as they boost the immune system and give the body a much better chance to heal itself.

At present, I am taking no pills or shots. Just a few vitamins . . .

If it's necessary by all means, listen to the docs not us innernet wizards LOL

But at least look at alternatives, many of us have found relief without
    a knife...

I'm a little late here but I to have had serious back problems. Back in the early 80's I was walking into a boiler room at a chicken slaughter house. We were called in for help as the chickens were waiting to be processed and they could not get the boiler to fire. The boiler was a Clayton steam generator and could get a full head of steam in 5 minutes. Anyway they were trying to start it and the inside had filled with raw gas. I yelled at them not to do that but to late. It exploded and I spent 8 days in the hospital. Had back surgery from a ruptured L5 disk.
I injured it again in 2010 when I went to the Vietnam Wall and suffered with it all the way home. It got so bad that when I got home I parked the bike and called for an appointment but couldn't get right in. I went to emergency as the pain was extremity intense and then I couldn't stand and walk.
Emergency just gave me pain killers. I finally got an appointment but my own DR was to busy and luckily got in to see a really good women DR. By then I was in a wheel chair as it was even worse. They did a MRI and L4 had a bad ruptured disk and was really pronounced. It was pushing on the main nerve, almost cutting it in half and I even got what's called foot drop, not good. DR went around procedure and got me into see a surgeon who turned out to be very good. Two days later my wife wheeled me into the hospital for surgery. That night after surgery I walked out of the hospital to get in the car.
I still get back problems but it's usually muscle now. The surgery is now micro less than an inch and was the best thing I did. Pain was immediately gone. Plus PT would not have helped and they even agreed.

Surgery is always and should be the last resort but there are times when it's the only alternative. They didn't fuse mine but told me one more time and it will be so I'm taking care of it as best I can. I'm back on a stationary bike and working out again plus gotta loose some more weight.

Hope you continue to heal without complications . . . drink a lot of water . . . pain meds have a tendency to dry you out. Happened to me and I had to go back to the hospital for 3 days to get "juiced up" and back to normal.

yep, I have that perc for back-up on my knee. Went to doc today for the knee since it got so bad again. He's gonna order a series of 5 injections of some kind of synthetic lube. We're trying to get the knee replacement put off a couple of years. I'm walking around like Chester,

other than not wanting to do it why put it off.

My dad did that and it just made it worse, waiting longer
means the good knee works double time taking up the slack
for the bad knee. He did this and ended up having both
replaced, it got pretty bad and then they did one knee at a time.

So after the first knee replacement he could hardly walk
because he couldn't support himself on the new one yet
and the old one that was supporting him was so bad
    it was difficult.

Don't wait or you'll end up with the same problem.

get it done before the government finds out
you need knees and makes you wait until all
    the D voters go first..
