pulled primary cover tonight with plans of changing the armature. i found a roll-pin...guessing it came off the starter solenoid spring at some time, but there is one in there. adjusted the clutch a little while in there. anyway...i understand oil to lubricate the chain and clutch plates, but why is my armature sitting in a pool of oil ? 20-30 oz. of oil cannot possibly stay off of it. i am an hvac tech/electrician, and this just goes against everything i think is good for something that generates electricity. i iz kornfuzed...help a brother out with some splainin'...

the pin is the same size as the alignement pin on top right side of xfer case, and solenoid plunger spring retainer. it just fell out as soon as the cover was removed. since sooo much has to be removed to replace stater, i am going to just charge battery before each ride for now. no sense in tearing all apart now, then doing it again in a month or two. thanks.

I am curious as to what prompted you to take the primary cover off in the first place?? What was happening?

I pull it off because it's easier to check the primary chain adjustment.

checked primary chain...within tolerance. adjusted clutch (was not fully engaging) it's so nice to be able to come up to neutral from 1st now. clutch plate was not square to spring plate either. i thought something was wrong when i saw very different thread reveals on adjustment nuts. it is 1 1/32" all around now. armature is only putting out 30vac at 1000 rpm ( i believe 60 is the vac i need), but with new regulator on, i am getting 14 volts at the battery. rode the piss out of her today, will ride till i puke tomorrow. oh, just so ya'll know, this is the first motorcycle i ever wrenched on. it is a good starting project, as i will surely wear out several tool sets on her.

Acually you don't have an armature. There is a stator and a rotor. The rotor has magnets in it. The stator is a set of winings that are bolted in place and the rotor spins around it.
