bad main breaker - power cuts off, then comes back, replace breaker, check
battery, check ground cable and connections be sure tight.
    could be bad ignition/coil

    Do you have Service Manual?

Good thing with the SM, you can at least trace things back.

The main breaker on HD's can get old and cause your issue,
HD replaced the breaker a few years back with a 40Amp Main fuse.

Typically though unless the breaker has taken a dive something else
would be tripping it or off.the key is that you just did some work, and
that is where I would start, typically my problems are created by something I
    did...

I went to a loco bike store and got a intake manifold kit and a main breaker 30amp and don't have a buddy with a Harley to try his coil. Going to work on the bike on Saturday.:banghead:

The kit I got was the wrong one. so I went to the Harley dealer and order the right parts. I glad I took it apart the intake parts were cracked. I should get the parts in on Friday. That sucks a week with out the bike.

I changed the Intake parts and it was still doing it ( shouting off and back firing ) I've been working on my bike all week I've change the coil and the main breaker and it's still doing it. So I started going threw all the wiring and I saw the wiring coming out of the sensor plate looked a little crimp so I took off the clamp but the wires were good and I did find a wire coming out of the Voltage Regulator grounding out, fixed that. I took apart the starter button on the handle bars and everything looked good. :banghead: and I even checked the wires behind the coil. What ever I did it seems to have slowed it down because it not doing it as much. I fix a couple of oil leaks and the front fender. this week end I'm doing to pull off the gas tank and clean it.

SO I'M STILL LOOKING FOR THE PROBLEM.

When you have the tank & seat off double check all the wires under there ,you just might have one or two rubbed raw from age
