    I have a 1986xlh 1100 sportster just put in new clutch plates and now it wont engage the gears?

    the FACTORY service explains it step by step. the plates are not releasing....one of the adjustments is out of whack, go back, read the instructions, not rocket science....good luck!!

    1/4 turn on the adjuster on primary not a full or half like a big twin cable must have full slack when adjusting clutch hub . make sure !

    A common mistake one makes is tightening the adjusting nuts down too tight (or too loose) on the pressure plate. There are either 3 or 5 nuts. The service manual will tell you what the dimension is between the releasing disc & pressure plate, but I like to adjust mine by feel - just enough to grab and not slip. You can do this with the rear wheel off the ground and go through the gears with the engine running. Check all around the circumference to make sure the distance between the releasing disc & pressure plate is the same.

    After you get that right, then make the other adjustments as stated above. I'm saying all this because you said you installed new clutch plates. Did you check that the spacers between them are perfectly flat? Sometimes they get warped from excessive heat from what I call "clutch abuse".
