My nephew Jon Gibson was one of the two pilots on board a U.S. Navy helicopter that crashed in the Red Sea on Sunday with five personnel aboard. He and the other pilot went down and are missing. Three personnel are accounted for and stable. Search efforts continue for two remaining personnel. The MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter, assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 6, nicknamed the HSC Indians, went down in the Central Red Sea at about noon local time during a routine flight, according to an official with the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet. The crash was not a result of any hostile activity, the official said. The Knighthawk had been trying to either land or takeoff from the rear helicopter deck of the USS William P. Lawrence, a guided-missile destroyer, at the time of the crash, officials said. A large wave stuck the ship and washed the helicopter over the side.

Our family is pretty close and are all still hopeful that he can be found. We need all the prayers we can get right now.

I spent a long time with my brother last night. The Navy is telling us that they won't leave the area but we now know that he went down with his helicopter and lost his life. Obama had held his unit over because of Syria as he was supposed to be home right now. He was also supposed to receive his lieutenant bars upon arrival back home.
He was the kind of young man that many could look up to and want to be like. He leaves behind a wife and two young kids. We do really appreciate all the prayers.

Sorry to hear it, couple guys I know said they figured the pilots did
not make it basically due to seating position, the crew can get out easy,
not so much so for those up front.

It must have been one heck of a wave, there are a lot of things
that can go wrong putting an aircraft on a ship...

Best to you and the family.

Official Navy Report. We also now know that Jon was to receive his lieutenant bars upon returning home. He will now receive them so he will be a Lieutenant.

Navy names two officers killed in Red Sea helo crash

    Staff report
    Posted: Tuesday Sep 24, 2013

The Navy on Tuesday released the names of two officers killed in the helicopter crash Sunday over the Red Sea.

Lt. Cmdr. Landon L. Jones and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Jonathon Shelby Gibson were assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 6, based out of Naval Air Station North Island, Calif.

Officials are continuing to investigate what caused their MH-60S Knighthawk to crash, but hostile fire has been ruled out. The officers had been operating in the central Red Sea with the destroyer William P. Lawrence.

Contrary to previous reports, there were not five sailors aboard the helicopter when it crashed, a Navy official said. The three other sailors initially thought to be on the helo had disembarked on the Lawrence, the official said.

Jones, 35, of Lompoc, Calif., is a Navy Academy grad who was commissioned in May 2001. His awards and decorations include: a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal; three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals; the Navy "E" Ribbon; and the National Defense Medal.

Gibson, 32, of Aurora, Ore., was commissioned in December 2008. He previously served as a naval air crewman first class (NAC/AW). His awards and decorations include two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals; the Navy "E" Ribbon; three Good Conduct Medals and the Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon.
