Asking for help - Just purchased a 2005 FXD from a local dealer. Only 3100 miles. Bike starts up and idles good. After warmed up, put bike in gear and it has trouble accelerating. It wants to hesitate, like its cold but it isn't. Air temperature was about 40 degrees. I tried a few things and found that acceleration is much better when I run with the enrichener 1/2 pulled out. The bike has the original air cleaner and stock pipes. I can't tell if its just running too lean and starving for fuel or if something else is causing the problem, like a vacum or venting issue. Any ideas? thanks.

I usually start mine in those temps with the choke out and when I take off will push it in part way for a couple miles. Gives it a chance to warm up then it's fine.

make sure its had time to warm up, I have to ride a good 5 to 10 minutes in warm weather to get mine to run good, if it is warmed up and hesitating when you try to accelarate it could be a intake leak, had that happen to my 96 FXDL.

By intake leak, do you mean a bad carb or manifold gasket? Thanks.

Yep, fatten up the slow jet will help but you could suffer fuel economy.

if its not running right (needing to keep chock out a little),its too lean now, with a fatter int. jet,it will be jetted right.fuel milage wont suffer, even if it did,do want slightly better fuel milage and a bike that runs like s**T????

first i would do is to make sure it is warmed up.....it takes a minimum of 15 miles at 2500rpm to bring the engine up to normal operating temp. i am sure it is lean as it comes that way from the factory.........

I agree with Chuck. Look and see if the plug has ever been taken out from the air/fuel mix screw. If it has not, then at factory setting and it came lean. First tune air / fuel mixture before you think of jetting. Go read the info from Ken from CV performance. Go to Harley-performance.com and read the info on carb tuning and carb jetting. It is a real good starting point to begin to get it in your mind. Then come back and ask questions. There are some guys on here really know their stuff. I have learned a lot listening to the talk without saying a word...
