New cam/gear cover . . .

    After having replaced the cam seal three times with no success (still leaks), I have decided to get a new polished cam cover for the shovel. Several reasons: Some material has been chipped away at the edge of the race where the seal goes in, causing, I suspect, some seepage, and the cover has been welded along the bottom where it was once cracked - yet another bogus part from my "rebuilder". It's an old original 70s Harley part, not merely used, but abused and sold as "used". I've had to replace a lot of those!

    I believe this will fix this pesky oil leak that has been messing up my rear exhaust pipe and tranny and causing oil to accumulate on the bottom of the motor and drip to the floor. This is the last leak and is just enough to be an annoyance. The new cover comes with a bushing and seal, a gasket and allen bolts for about $140.

    I'm planning on taking the new cover (when it arrives) and the cam to a machine shop and have them ream the bushing to size. Any other suggestions?

    This is something I should have done a long time ago, and the last of the fubbered parts that are left to replace. The leak has gotten worse, so it's time . . .

    Heck, there's nothing to it on mine. Just remove the old cover and put in the new one. Don't have to take anything else off. The only hangup is the coil wire and that's minor.

    If I still have the leak, the next thing to upgrade is the cam itself. Would go with an Andrews stock grind.

    Yup, I'm pretty sure all the hack's parts are gone now :cool:.

    What have you got in there now??If it's stock grind and you like where it comes on,then yep...if you want a little more punch earlier, get a more bottom end cam than stock

    Stock cam in there now and seems to be okay.

    Nope. I'll order the cover around the 12th, payday. Keeping it simple has been my goal on this build.

    Ordered a Paughco petcock for the new gas tank. As usual, not quite enough shekels to do everything at once, but it's getting done! Petcock was $50 and will fit my Paughco tank. I think the new tank looks sexy ha-ha. I have positioned it a few inches farther back toward the seat. I will post pics when I figure out what I'm doing wrong . . .

    I am going to have to remember to frequent gas stations more often :rolleyes:.

    Nope. The new tank is 2.4 gallons & the old tank is 3.5 gallons. Both are Paughco tanks. I always thought the old tank looked a bit chunky. New one definitely has a more streamlined appearance. And if the trade off for the sleeker look is less capacity, I'll take it :cool:.

    You should have about an 80 mile range with the small tank...Had the peanut tank on the sporty,I could pass everything but a gas station:p...when I filled up I asked,"How far to the next one"? ... lol:D

    Wow. I have a 3.4? on the Roadster now and find it too small. Ran out twice this year. Hoping for the 4.3 found on the Custom to let me travel further in '14. Can't imagine going smaller! Must be lots of choices for gas down your way.
    I will say the smaller tanks look way cooler. But the coolness fades as you push it to the next fillup.

    I had an Ironhead in the early 70s that had an even smaller tank at 2.2 gallons. Came that way from the factory. But the Sporty got 50 miles per gallon. Rode it cross country several times and only ran out of gas once riding on 66 through Arizona. Gas stations were farther apart in those days LOL.

    Here we got gas stations everywhere . . . should be no problem.
