    Hi to all,
After 30 years of wanting one, I got my first Harley last fall. It was a deal I couldn't pass up. They weren't getting any cheaper and I wasn't getting any younger. I have an 883R Sportster in orange with a blacked out engine. My question is, since my limited resources are currently strained, what can I do to make it louder, (and safer...there are a lot of deer in my area) without replacing the tailpipes? I kind of like the looks of them... they just work a little too well.
Thanks for having this forum. I look forward to hearing from you all.

They make deer whistles that mount to the bike, the air passing through them while you are moving emits a high frequency sound the deer can hear but you can't. No deer around here so I don't have first hand experience with them, but on other sites where people live in deer areas they swear by them.

Other than changing out the mufflers with a set of slip-ons, you are limited. For years harley riders have taken a drill to their muffler baffles, but this is irreversible.

One alternative is to look on ebay for the same mufflers that someone else took off their bike, and use them as your guinea pig. You can usually find them for under 50 bucks. Start by drilling a small hole through the center of each baffle and see how it sounds. Keep it small or you'll have to rejet (carb) or remap (EFI).

For warning deer, I second the recommenation of those deer whistles.

Careful with them deer whistles, If you mount them backwards the deer will run right at you... :roflmao:
Just kidding, good luck with your new ventures.
Speaking of deer, I saw a wild turkey fly across the highway this morning. I've seen them cross small streams before, but this was across six lanes... Pretty cool.

I would go with the deer whistles .I have an old shovelhead and back a few years ago I had 36in drag pipes no baffel and still the deer around here would stand in the road and look at you ; had to stop more than once to let them get out of the way. A buddy last summer with a decker with a good sounding pipes not all that quiet had a deer run into the side of him didn't knock him down but broke right hand saddlebag and messed up his tour pack and some real sore ribs

i have a set of deer whistles on my eg. i live in the big thicket in southeast texas. more deer here than you can shake a stick at!! i also travel in louisiana and mississippi. i dont know if they work, but i dont see many deer on the bike, i see a lot more when im in my truck. the deer i do see on the bike are not facing the road, but the woods...dogs dont seem to be a problem now either. cheap insurance if they work....if not, they are not very noticeable................

the deer wistle depends on air flow so if you are traveling alot of slower roads yiu might think about electronic ones

    Dead Deer Are Good Deer...unless...

...the deer dies by ramming your vehicle. I live in Central Pennsylvania and already have two deer on my hit record. One happened in our brand new VW Golf with only 42 miles. Fortunately, the EG I ride never had a hit and better never have a hit.

Regarding the deer whistle...I don't see any benefit with them. Both our vehicles had whistles on and still got hit by deer. NO, they were not installed backwards (chuckle). Slowly down and laying on the horn seemed to be working well for me, both on the vehicle and on the Harley.

Regarding the noise...I have mufflers that baffle downward and seem to help with noise. Not sure if there are aftermarket tips you can put on the muffler to point them down. Seems the noise increases as the sound bounces off the pavement.

    Happy Riding!

The only thing that works with deer is to slow down and look hard. i've heard of praying too. The rut is when you really want to look out

    Deer whistles

there are a whole range of these on the market but I have Heard that these are some of the best and that once heard a deer will never return to the same road. Browning, Colt, Glock, heckler & Koch, Ruger or even good old Smith and Wesson. I have also heard that these act as very good anti theft devices.:roflmao:

I've read several stories about these whistles other than the manufacturers claims the scientific testing shows they do nothing.

Heres a link to a BMW riders group report Deer Whistles

Best advice is to not ride at sunset during the Spring food feast or fall Rutting seasons. Thats when most of the collisions occur.

I love this claim by a Manufacturing company..

The Georgia Game and Fish Department began their investigation by requesting data from the "scientific tests" the advertisers had used to support their product claims. In response, one distributor sent a packet of newspaper clippings and letters from sheriffs [sic] departments, all attesting the whistles were a godsend. One deputy had tested them by driving his whistle-equipped patrol car toward a herd of deer in a field. The deer scattered, he reported with enthusiasm. :roflmao: Such testimonials - of no scientific significance - prompted responsible evaluation.

Yeah like the deer were oblivious to a large moving car in a field coming toward the herd, it was the whistle as Deer can't hear cars LOL:roflmao:

The deer whistles always get little pieces of bugs in them and then don't work. Had them and finally threw them in the trash. Best defense is a set of good eyes and watch your speed, avoiding times when the deer are out and did I say a good set of eyes scanning left and right.

Drill the pipes out a bit at a time checking the sound and when you can afford it put a good set of aftermarket pipes on after listening to the ones you like.
