Hi guys, Just had some vandalism repairs done on my 98 Fatboy. While in there I had the handlebar mounted turn signal/running Lts removed and had a light bar installed. They added a small toggle switch to control passing Lts. When I hit the high beams the passing Lts go off. Blinkers work normally. Is this a standard set up or are there other options or configurations? I always liked the idea of extra lighting around the headlight (running lts,) to show that it is in fact a cycle . I hope this is clear enough. Thanks.

Yeah that's the way they're set up, I think there's a law about having accessory or auxiliary lights lit with high beams on, I'm not 100% sure on that tho, cops usually tell me when they see I'm breaking a law:eek: and which one it is:confused:

Cowboy, our spots stay on 'cause they are Cop bikes and they are wired thru the pursuit switch.

My 98 FLHTCI does exactly the same thing. In fact, I have the halogen lights in addition to the running lights, mounted on my highway bar. If I turn on my high beams, both running and halogen lights turn off. This was a law in PA and NJ. I now reside in NC and believe it is the same law here.

Thanks for the input, now that I've thought about it, it seems that they took the low beam wire, fed the togggle, then took a switch leg to the passing lamps from there. That means the original running light (constant on) wires are not being used. Now I need dual element sockets and lamps where the turn signals(only) are now, and get the original turn/running configuration. Seems they would do this from the start.

Most states have laws prohibiting the running of passing and/or fog lamps with the high beam on..

I've been questioned on it once with my old Toy Supra, then again I had the high beams, built in fog lights and a set of PIAA driving lights on it.:D

    Your lights are working properly.

To change it you have to splice the fog light power wire off the harness and onto a constant power source, there is an orange wire with a white stripe that is aux power and you can tap into that for your power.

Then your fogs are independent and will work off the fog switch itself.

Laws that require them to turn off with the high beam off don't seem to make sense (not that sense is a requirement for laws). I mean, you have high beams on when there is no other vehicle in front of you or approaching, why does it matter then? It would seem to me that when you have low beam on, like with approaching vehicles, that you would want to make sure you are not blinding the oncoming driver. Just my thought.

It is now legal here in Oregon for a motorcycle to have its spot lights on with low beam or high beam.

I have a wiring diagram for the touring bikes and have converted many over so that the spots stay on when the brights are on or off.

The original running light is the low beam in the headlight, and for the signal/runninglight all you have to do is reroute the leads that went to the handlebar mounted sig/run lights to the new ones you installed on the light bar. I can't see why they wouldn't have done that for you either.
Personally I like to put weatherproof disconnects for the spots and signals inline, so if you want to take the light bar off you just have to unplug it.

Glad to see there is someone else as "good"with putors as me FLHT :D ;)

I've wired several bikes using the diagram and it works really great. Nice to have the spots on with the brights when out in dark country especially when there is a lot of deer out there. :D
