So, I just tried out my new compressor AND new gravity feed paint gun on base board molding... Using MinWax Polyshades (stain with polyurithane)..... I now have a NEW level of respect for painters that use paint guns......Not sure that the average 5 year old could not do any WORSE then me..... ANY variation of speed, elevation off the work, angle, EVERYTHING has impact!!! OUCH!!! I am THINKING that maybe once my wood dries, I could be happy with it....while wet, almost have to say....ouch.....was not as easy as people make it look on TV!!!  So, to Chucktx and all others that are painters.....I bow down to you.

let us just say that the molding that I have has various "textures" .... some of these have small "pools" of stain......there are light spots, there are dark spots.....Time will tell if it is requiring sandpaper or not..... 500$ in lumber is NOT going to waste.....it WILL be used. only question is how much more work is involved...... :(

rotfl...........sorry, but i had to laugh.......it is better to try it on a scrap piece before tackleing the real thing......you should be fine when it dries....hopfully you didnt spray a too thick coating....should build it up in layers, with a fine misting........when it dries, and if there arnt to many "little splinters"...i am not sure what they are called in wood...use some steel wool to smooth it out......if not use a very fine sandpaper.....you dont want to break through into the wood, just stay on the outer coating....it you do break through, no problem.........just shoot it again....LIGHTLY!!!!:)
    have fun..........

ya, well you laugh.....so am I...sorta..... will look at it tomorrow and see how much "damage" there is and if I can live with it..... My problem is that even using a piece of "scrape", would not have helped much as I THINK my biggest problem was on the 6-15 foot lengths..... did not know how much THAT type of play would work. also, have some "pooling" on some of the low spots of the details of the molding.....excess ran to the low point....I will assess again in the morning.

Chuck, you mentioned doing air brush work.....what kind of change for a bike gas tank??? have a couple thoughts, would be fun to get done, but don't know how many pennies to pinch!! if you need pics or such to get better idea let me know....never delt with custom before....

for me would be NO repairs that I know of.....(physical damage....) sounds like just determining the details and such to determin the $$ for the tank. How long does something like that take on a normal basis?? Biggest reason I ask is that we are a one car/one bike family.....I ride, therefore my wife drives. just looking at the logistics that would surround something like this if I could make it happen.... ;) I have a few ideas, but don't know what detail is acheivable and such.... like I said before, am pretty much a novice when it comes to custom..... am kinda looking at a couple military type patches and a larger graphic on both sides....course, I may be smoking/drinking something also!!! ;-)
