New Speedo for Sportster

    Hi guys

    A mate, while working in the workshop, managed to drop a plank of wood across my bike and smashed in the speedo and the glass.

    He is happy to replace it, pay for it get it done on insurance or what ever, so that is not an issue.

    ....Wish he ad done in the tank too, I could have got a bigger capacity one at the same time...oh well

    Anyway.

    if I buy a new unit, will it need to be a dealer fit? plug in to the computer to set up with the security system, TSM SSM etc etc. And what about the mileage on it, can the old mileage get 'electronically wound' on to it or will it be a Zeroed gauge?

    A dealer can get you a new speedometer set to the correct miles

    it will be a swap/bolt on process

    Or you can go on Ebay and try and find a takeoff
    from a wreck or replacement with close to the same miles.

    Did that for a buddies Road King, his odometer screen went out,
    we knew the miles approx so got a used one off Ebay
    wrote the old miles on the back and the starting off the new
    one so you know the real miles...

    I was expecting a big expense from the dealer to fit it/re program it as well as the cost of the item

    Here is a list of speedometers on Ebay for sportsters

    I would check with a dealer on the swap cost before buying
    a used one so you know the one you get on ebay is a deal or not..

    TRouble is a lot of places in the USA won't ship to me here in the UK even if I pay the extra shipping...Progressive Suspension to name one....bunch of **£%$%&

    well there is a lot of fraud on ebay
    most of it from people wanting to buy
    stuff to be shipped to eastern Europe
    then the funds never show or the check
    is sent and it's bad, by the time the check
    clears your are out of money.

    do you have anyone stateside you could ship it
    to and they ship it on to you...

    Yes, it is electronic.

    The only expensive items I will ever buy from E-Bay tend to only be from sellers that at least appear to be full time retailers /dealers in their own right..such as St.Pauls Harley.

    No, no one I know apart from you chaps that I know in the USA. Do know people in Canada though

    Hi Johnny, that sound great. I'll keep that in mind, if not for this for other bits.

    The local dealer here is working out a price for me to go on an insurance claim quote, as the bloke that did the damage is paying and he is doing it through his work insurance.

    Thanks for the offers. I just had a phone call from the dealer to say the insurance quote letter is ready and I can go in and collect.

    The bloke whose insurance it is going on, has just gone to Malta for a wedding, so it will be a couple of weeks before there is any more progress
