I have a 75 Sportty...I have 12 volts at the starter button...but when I push it,the votage drops to .3 volts.I'm sure I have a short somewhere on that curcuit. The lights work fine..I did replace the starter relay...hopeing that would solve my problem...but it didn't...The battery is good..I have a good ground.Any input in fixing this problem would be greatly appreciated..Al

make sure you have a good ground to the frame and engine....make sure the power is getting to the relay, and that the relay has its ground. can you manually jump the relay and start the bike?

If I jump the relay,it will crank, and run for a moment. The relay is grounded.

you have a wire probably grounding out
    from under the tank

I would remove the tank, open the controls and check the wire
    for any cuts or breaks...

IF you can get to a dealer get a Service Manual for the bike,
it will have the wire diagram laid out for you so you
    can trouble shoot it.

there should be a wire going to the starter from the
switch, pull that connector and check the volts with a meter
I'll bet it has low voltage.

Open up the control covers, see if a wire is shorting there

also check the voltage at the switch incoming. YOu can
pierce the wire with a sharpened paper clip and touch it with the
meter and see if the problem is going to the switch or coming out.

check the voltage on the other side of the switch,

then you'll know where the problem is...

I have a manual for my bike, which has a wireing diagram.I checked the voltage at both sides of the switch, with the button pushed in and got .3 volts.I started checking wires and took the headlamp bulb out, thats where a connection is,and I got 12.3 volts at both sides of the switch then, everything worked fine then...I checked connections and moved wires around so the headlamp didn't push on any of them, when I installed it, works fine now.I got lucky that was the first place I looked.

If the problem is gone it will probably come back, check all connections in headlight area and make sure they are all clean and tight I wouldn't want you to get stranded some where.
