Not sure if I have Stage one already

New to the site but cant tell you how helpful it's been already....although I may actually be more confused. I have the usual cough in the carb at off-idle and since there are sooooo many different ideas for fixing the problem I wanted to just ask directly....also because I have read hours of these posts and cant seem find the answer.

First off; I have an almost stock fxstb. The only mods are a set of hooker troublemaker pipes (not the super short ones) with the baffles still in and a screamin eagle/K&N air filter. In all other circumstances the bike performs wonderfully...roll on (1/2 to 3/4 T) , start up, and WOT.

I have checked many times for air leaks and went ahead and replaced the intake seals, the carb seal, and even the Map Sensor seal anyway. I pulled the enricher/choke plunger out and checked for proper seating, which seems to be fine, and made sure the mount was tight.

The pilot is a 48 and the main is a 190. I am somewhat sure that the previous owner already installed a CVP stage one kit, but not 100%.

    Two questions:

    1. How can I tell if my bike already has a CVP stage one kit for sure?

    2. It seems that the only way to 'fix' the cough is to turn the AFR screw out to just under four turns. The cough does go away, however; everything else about the bike indicates a 'too rich' condition, i.e. slightly black smoke out the pipes and black, sooty plugs. Could it be the needle, or am I missing something?

P.S. I have checked the diaphram too.

be sure you are torquing all fastners. be sure to use hd clamps on the exhaust....aftermarket wont hold...and torque them. with the screw backed out to where it stops coughing, does it still black smoke and soot the plugs??

Chuck, I am pretty sure the exhaust clamps are HD and they dont seem to be leaking, although I don't know a good way of checking that, other than just looking....open to suggestions.

Yes, the black smoke is still there. This afternoon I started the bike after an oil change and the back jug didn't work. The plugs were relatively new. I put a brand new set in and it worked fine. When I pulled the plug it was sooty and black.

I am all set to buy the stage one kit from Ken, just want to be sure I am not duplicating the process.

    Any other ideas?

By the way Chuck, I really hope that that isn't your daughter or niece in that picture. If so than I feel really bad about what I've been thinking. I love her car washing technique.

a way to check for leaks in the exhaust is soapy water..cold pipe..exhaust is pressure....it should bubble......for intake leaks use wd40 and the red straw....engine will change idle when it is sucked into the engine...not the daughter...lol lol. get a jet for the main, one size smaller and try that.

If the plugs are that sooty then either 1.) the jetting is too rich, or 2.) the needle is shimmed, a clip type with the clip too high, or incorrectly installed.

The easiest way to tell needles apart:
Stock HD - dull gray color with numbers stamped just below the head. Looks like a nail.
DynoJet, SE, Yost - Rather than a head the needle has several slots and a clip. May be colored red, blue, or made of brass. The higher on the needle the clip the richer the off-idle and midrange mixture.
CVP - Looks like stock except no number codes. Also has a hard anodized coating that gives it a slight amber color.

FYI, the old N65C needle used on the early 1988 carbs that has been so popular since its richer in the off-idle range, was discontinued by Harley 7 months ago and will not be sold anymore. The closest you'll find is maybe a NOKK or NOKT needle if any dealer still has any around (also discontinued). The CVP needle has very similar characteristics to both the N65C and NOKK. :D
