My 07 EGU with 15,000 miles gives me a bang every now and then. I thought it was me releasing the starter button too soon sometimes. I can go for 20 or 25 starts with no trouble then on one of my lazy days I'll get a bang. Almost like it just about started then kicked back. So do I have a failing compensator or am I right that I'm just lazy and release the starter button too soon? I've only had this happen when it's hot. That's why I'm not sure if it's just me getting lazy on the start button now and then or if something is starting to fail.

Happens with my 11 on occasion, generally I've jumped the EFI startup button to early
and it's hot. When an engine is hot and has High compression the addition of fuel early
can light off and cause kickback, mostly carb bikes though.

Yea my carbed 01 Springer does that to, especially when I pull in to a gas station then start it up.

You are right, this has only happened when it's hot and after I've refueled. Sure does sound like something is getting torn up. I don't remember my 85 EG doing it though.:wtf:

Could be the preponderance of the ongoing effect of 10% ethanol too. Wouldn't hurt to run some startron thru a couple tank fulls for S&G's.

Maybe after a while some remapping dial in do overs might be in order too?

Mine will do the same thing when starting COLD or HOT sometimes. Weird. I think it's the gas, even though I've been adding Seafoam to it.

Nope, not ethanol related. I get my fuel from the only station in town that hasn't converted YET.

Does the bang sound similar to a back fire?

Please when you get to the bottom of it lets us know.

Use to one could figure either the starter gear would grind and whine. Or the build up of excess gas in the combustion chamber would cause a loud "bang". All these new technology noises will eventually be explained....I hope.:wtf:

My 09 was doing exactlly the same thing. While the tranny was being fixed I put on SE compensator. Not much better. Believe it or not, a new battery fixed it.

Mine started doing similar to that after I had the Wood triple 7 cams installed. Turned out the hot restart was set too rich. they leaned the hot restart out a bit and all is well again.:D

It would be a good idea to check voltage on the solinoid trigger wire
and to be sure the battery is up to snuff when hot,

There were/are reportes of the compensator being a problem.

Buddy had it happening all the time with his 07, turned out to be
some problems in the tune of the bike.

Once we built the 106 and he had it tuned the problem disappeared.

Load test the battery, when hot if possible. A weak battery will not provide sufficient energy to keep the starter pinion engaged on a hot restart.

It's our new "crap gas". If you try to start the bike quickly after it sits for a few seconds from being run hot, the fuel starts to boil in the fuel rail. These new fuels won't ignite as quickly and causes a backfire. Sounds ugly, but doesn't hurt anything. When bike sits for a longer period, the fuel cools enough for this to not be a problem.

I run StarTron in every tank of gas, and it solves this problem completely, plus it eliminates water condensation in the tank.

Damn that would get expensive. I go thru a tank of gas every other day. Fuel bill alone is terrible but add that stuff, good grief.:witsend:

I usually pull the choke out to start it when it's only shut down for a short time and still hot then push it right back in after it starts. Helps a lot so the starter does not hit hard. When it's cooled down no problem. Mine has a new battery.

StarTron costs about $7 for a 12oz bottle. Only need 1 oz/ 6 gals. gas, so a bottle will last a long time.
