I just took off my oil filter on the shovel and found this floating inside anyone know what it is? looks like some sort of pressure valve so.. do I need it? how does it go back in? cause its not doing any good floating inside the filter, nothing in the manual about it and none of my friends seen this before.

do not know anything about a shovel but looks like a check valve {arrow}, my guess is that it came out of the center in the recess inside the hex/tube

I thought so too but the only thing that keeps it there is the rubber o ring,it comes out pretty easy so what will eventualy happen is once the oil starts flowing it will get pushed out in to the filter again.

still looking for a good schematic, my guess is that the arrow points in and the oil flow would push it against the seat in tube. if the o-ring is old might have allowed valve to fall out . if you try to put valve in recess how does it fit? also did you turn engine backwards while working on bike, would possibly reverse flow and push valve into filter.

it is a aftermarket pre evo, i've changed the rubber o ring it seems to fit tighter but it goes in both ways, I dont want to get it wrong and have it come out again

you need to make sure of oil flow direction. if not on internet, remove plugs and crank motor over, guessing oil comes in outer area then thru filter then back in center. this would keep check valve in recess. if it is a kicker( LOL) put it in high gear and turn front OOPS rear wheel to turn engine over and see where the oil comes from in filter base. or possibly the hoses have been on the filter wrong for a long time, looking at the check valve I think from outside to center should be the path of flow

It looks like you have a wealth of information stamped on that brass part, I would use that info to find exactly what that part was and would not put anything together without knowing. The very last thing I would do is guess about where & how it belongs.

I was thinking it was some kind of thermostat, but without a oil cooler it would make much sense.

can u show a couple of pictures of the whole filter housing? is it frame mounted with hoses? I really think the (part ) is a check valve to keep the motor from sumping. if you put the mystery part in the center hole one way it is most likely recessed and not noticeable , the other way would stick out into the filter, never seen anything like that. the other question as i mentioned is if remote are the lines on the correct way to keep the check valve pushed into the center with flow?
