Oil Filter

Looked up on the Wix web site and found two lengths of filters. #57348 is the oem length 3.404" and #57514 is 5.598". Both are chrome and have exact dimensions as oem except for #57514 is longer. I am thinking longer filter element means more filter surface area which means less filter bypass and higher flow rate and more oil capacity to boot. Has anyone tried the long filter? I think I will give it a shot. I have cut apart a Wix filter and a fram filter. The fram did not have a bypass spring, it had cardboard that crushes and lets the filter bypass and once it bypasses it does not close again. The wix had a spring that when it bypasses it will close again. Also the filter element looked much superior. So I know Wix sells a quality product. Would like some input from you guys as well.

That is right,a longer filter would have more surface area and cool a tad more, if it will fit, should be good to go .

Yes, bigger is better (more filtering area, lasts longer, tends to run a little bit cooler) & while I can't tell you what the trick is for the big twins, I can for '91-up Sportster engines - a Motorcraft FL-1A or equivalent. That's a filter for a full-size Ford pickup, van, etc. & the Buell guys told us about that trick. I run a NAPA #1515 which is made by Wix & is their version of the Ford filter. Black with just a NAPA sticker that will peel off. Somebody makes one in chrome if that's what you want.

There are a zillion part numbers for oil filters, but there aren't that many different filters - any given one can be used in many different applications. If the bypass & pressure relief settings are right for the application & the filter media filters down to the right micron size, it doesn't matter if it's got the H-D name on it or is listed as being for a H-D. Somebody out there probably knows which big filters work on the BT's like the Ford filter does on Sportsters/Buells.

I do know that napa and most auto part stores carry filters for sportsters, even wally-world. I have bought at one time a chrome replacement that was longer than the short stock, not on purpose, just came that way. Differn't brands make them differn't colors also, my last one was black, this time it's orange.
