do not have an answer , try google or a H/D shop manual, but a return would return to bottom of tank and a vent should be at top if you can look in tank. The incorrect way will most likely create a MESS if nothing else.

On second thought return might not go all the way to bottom of tank, only part way to bottom. Vent should be at top and possibly have a baffle in top of tank. Do you know which line is return and vent?

Did a quick google , tank has two fittings at top and one at bottom with a filter in tank? Have not worked in a bike of your vintage. What I saw is that return goes to fitting to filter.

Return if you mean return to engine usually comes off the bottom of the tank,
Return if you mean from engine to tank will go to the top, one vent one return.

you should have three lines, vent, return, and to engine

If all you have is vent and return no oil would flow.

I agree with HRK , the terminology can be confusing in that RETURN can be the feed line to pump suction that is on bottom to feed oil to motor or Return to tank/filter inlet from pump/ sump
