If you read or are familiar with my thread (hurt my road king) here is a new development. Put an Arlen Ness mechanical oil pressure gauge on about a month ago, oil press would peg gauge cold start above idle with 20/50 oil , hot at idle scared me low, gauge twitched at 0/5 at slow/ass idle hot. would come up quick to 35/40 cruising. Sunday after 60 miles got gas, took of looked down and H/S really low, zip/nada at idle 15/20 floating around at best 2000 or so rpm. engine sounded ok, started heading for the ranch 4/5 miles looked again and SHAZAM 45/50 at cruising and now 10/15 at idle better than ever. thinking the relief valve might have some issues with the coating from the piston skirts. old school v/8 high performance rule of thumb was 10 psi per 1000 rpm with conventional bearings. have a b/n h/v pump that i could put in but do'nt like the thought of excessive oil getting pushed to the top end all the time.

Problem with oil pressure gauges is they just give you something go worry about

Cold your oil creates more pressure. Hot it will drop big time at idle and jump up at speed

i know the pump runs at engine rpm just like the charging system and 20/50 is like syrup on a cold start but this was WAY to much of a change for not much of a change from an average ride. the air temp might have been 85 and I do not think that the small amount of slow driving/ hot soak at the gas station should have affected the oil pressure that much. This was a very large change all at once , now oil pressure seems to be better, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

If the oil pump is working and there are no obstructions to the oil flow, everything will get lubricated. HRK is right.

That kind of fluctuation is normal. When my bike is cold I am near 60psi and it stays there until warmed up. At warm idle at stop signs I drop to about 10 psi. Unless your pump is bad, it is always circulating oil. I put a different spring in the cam plate to give me higher oil pressure. Needed? Sounds like you have plenty of pressure. I put it in to assist in pumping the lifers faster after they have bled down from sitting for awhile.

Like Johnny Biker I put a different spring in my pump, ERTproducts.com I think, hardest part of changing the spring is taking off the exhaust to get to the cam chest.

The oil pump. It's part of the cam plate,

ok funny that this came up since last year i was running a hybrid plate with se 251 cams. last week i went back to the 585 g cams just did not like all the valve train clatter . it was just driving me crazy. any how took my old oil pump apart and spec out the georotors and found i had some dipples on the pump gear so running that pump was not a good idea also the pump case showed a bit of wear

i did blow up the top end pretty bad so i was not thrown back by this. yes i over rev the shit out of it but i won ! screw it i can fix it lmfao thats a whole other story. any how idid not want to modify the hybrid plate to gear drives because i want to use it in the dyna set up .

so my wife found me a fueling pump for the 99-06 cam plate cheaper than the original pump replacement for the 99-06 awesome and it has a large scavange and high volume pressure side no brainer !well being a super duper know it all typical tech i am bolt it all up .

fire the motor awesome 55 psi till it got warm and boom 5 psi if im lucky and its not fully hot yet pauli aint happy !SO i say self! read the instructions and the instructions say and i quote FOR THE 99-06 CAM PLATE. STRECH THE STOCK SPRING 0.50 MORE THAN THE STOCK SPRING LENGTH.

that is the shitty way to build pressure so so i posted this on htt and got a shit load of responses use the axtell bypass valve buy this spring by that spring . and i rememberd that i had changed jhonnys when we put his motor together . so i put a call into baisley and i must have spent an hour on the phone with those guys what a great set of people any how he said the fueling pump and the stock pump need help .

the fueling espesially cuz they just use a seperator plate and no wave washer to put the gears up against the plate face. and they also machine a special check valve with a slight taper to better seal the bypass. 34.00 dollars spring and valve. to my door .specs are as follows cold 60 psi slightly warm 42 warm 33. hot 106 heat index 11 psi 106 heat index going down the highway 3.300 rpm 52 psi .

keep in mind hear i have 60 percent more scavange side on this pump idont suggest this lm4 spring for a stock pump lm2 yes 4to 6 grand 106 heat index 60 psi fully hot . i do run 50 wieght vr1 racing valvoline in this heat . motor with this pump and oil pressure never gets above 295 deg f

rode again sat. pretty warm and humid, oil pressure did the same thing after a short stop.I am going to move the gauge or put a second gauge on crash bar . starting to question if the heat soak is effecting the gauge that is mounted on rear rocker cover
