Just wondering what everyong might think about oil pumps and when they take a dump on you. Do they just stop working completely? Do they work sporatically? I am having a problem with filling the crankcase with oil and then it dumping out of the crankcase vent. (I checked the ball valve and it seems okay) I am wondering if it is possible that the oil is just not getting pumped out of the crankcase fast enough due to a bad pump. I do have some oil movement in the tank but hard to tell if it is the amount that it should be or if it is just moving because the bike is running. Today when I came back from a couple mile ride the oil pressure gauge was jumping around a lot and then just flat bottomed out. I am at my wits end with this dang thing....Thanks.

One more thought.... I know I need to vent the crankcase, but could I take the hose and tee it into the vent line that comes from above the oil pump that goes to the oil tank??

For sale: 89 FXR.....j/k, for now anyways!

The oil pressure shouldn't be dropping off like you say and if the crankcase is filling up but not returning the oil to the gearcase to be scavenged you do definatly have a pumping problem. Aquick and simple check to do is pull the nosecone (gearcase cover) and make sure that the oil pump gear and shaft are turning. You could have sheared the keyway that holds the gear in place on the shaft and allows the pump to turn. Don't give up on the FXR, they don't make them anylonger and it's a great platform. The EVO motor is still a very good piece of machinery and it's not that hard to rebuild.

    FXR oil pump

I had the same problem with my 85 fxrs. I had harley take the oil pump off and they called ma and asked if I wanted to rebuild my motor. I said no put a new oil pimp on it. 3 months later my motor blew up! Then I had a complete rebuild and another new oil pump. I say you are ready for a rebuild! save some money and do it now before you trash everything! The bike has never run better and is fast as hell since the rebuild! Sacrament hd did a great job.

    Good Luck!

If it's sumping it's probably a pump problem, don't ride it anymore until you fix it. As was said pull the cam cover, it will probably be full of oil too, so be ready, replace the gears and the pump if necessary.

Problem ended up being a sheared keyway after a tooth broke off of one gear on the scavenger side of the oil pump. The oil was not getting returned fast enough so it was backing up in the crankcase and then going where it could....so much fun. Later
