    Oil temp question

I posted this same question a while ago on this forum for a Softtail. The answer I got was that the temp should be at least 210 to properly boil off condensation, and probably not more than 280 for an extended period. Syntho oils can handle a bit more heat than dyno, however as long as you don't run in the 300 degree range and change the oil every 3,000 miles or so, the temperature doesn't make a great deal of difference .

I watched my guage a lot for the first month or so. It never got above 240 degrees regardless of ambient temperature or riding conditions. After a while I just ignored it. It was a classic case of too much information. Now unless I am in heavy traffic or on a long high-speed run, I really don't pay much attention. With the way the oil tank is set up on the softtail, I can tell just by the heat rising off it whether the motor needs a rest. If I remember right, my '91 sportster had the tank right under the seat, also.

If you live in hot climates or do a lot of city driving, maybe it will be a lot more useful to you. Hope this helps.

    Oil Temp

Check out the December issue of American Iron. There is an excellent article about oils... dino vs. synthetic etc.
