With all the oil dipsticks with the temp built in. What is the normal operating temp. for oil? Also how high would you let the oil temp get before you shut down the engine?

I've been told you don't want it to get any higher than 240 for any length of time. Twin cams run hotter a bit hotter than Evo's, and pre Evo bikes. That's why I run V-Twin Mobil 1 20W-50 in my TC. Running a synthetic oil is better. If the climate you're in stays hot most of the time, unlike where I am in Michigan, maybe an oil cooler might be something to look into. American Iron Mag. had a good article on this subject in April of 2000. If I can find it, I'll post it. Very informative.

I bought a brand new 2004 Electraglide in May. I took it to 3 Harley dealers because of the heat. Scanalyzer said temp in air conditioned shop at idle under no load was 260 F. My manual says normal operating temperature is 230 F. I called HD. They say anything under 300 F is within specs and normal and acceptable to them.

I sold bike in July, too hot to ride in the climate I ride in. If it needs an oil cooler and syn oil in it to make it rideable, HD should include those items originally, IMHO.

Tinsin, where do you get V-Twin Mobil 1 and in a 20w50. I went to several places and could not find a V-Twin Mobil. I did find Mobil 1 (but it wasn't V-Twin) and bought the 15w50 for my 2002 Dyna, which incidentally doesn't run near as hot as the Electraglide did. I've heard talk of V-Twin Mobil 1 oil before but never seen it.

    Thanks!

    oil temp

FFFL ... I get Mobil 1 v-twin oil at an auto parts store called Murray's Auto. They're a franchise around here in Michigan and in some northern parts of Ohio and Indiana. I used regular Mobil 1 20W-50 after I got 3000 miles on it. After that I used Mobil 1 v-twin oil. I think it has more minerals/elements in it that make it better than regular Mobil 1. An oil cooler will never hurt. Just a thought.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll keep looking for the V-Twin Mobil 1. We don't have a Murray's here but surely one of the parts houses will have it. I really had been looking in scooter shops.

As most of you know I purchased a 2004 Road King Classic and put in the 95ci big bore kit. I just got back from Death Valley, which on the day I was there got up to 125 degrees. I run total synthetic HD oil and have a super premuim oil cooler kit that Harley has put out. My bike never got above 239 degrees. If you keep your oil under 300 degrees it will be fine. If it gets hotter that, pull over and let it cool down. Ride Safe, David.
