I've asked before and gotten some great replies from you guys over the last year and a half. I've tried everything that you suggested and put about $1500.00 and many weeks into this bike this year, but I still have a rattling sound when coming to a stop, closed throttle at about 1800 to 2000 rpm. It sounds like ball bearings rattling around in the engine.

The last thing I just did was replaced my compensator (all 3 parts) and chain, so all that side is new. I inspected the trans and input shaft and clutch. I bought new heads, and pistons, checked the rocker side clearance, lifters and bores, cam and bearing....

This EVO runs great and idles great, shifts great, very smooth at 85mph, but that noise when coming to a stop or going down hill is driving me crazy.

One last time..... Any suggestions ?? :witsend:

    Thanks,
    T

it's got to be exhaust. especially the downhill thing. have you tryed changing the amount of fuel? sounds maybe like a light reversion thing. hope this helps but i think you've heard this before. think about a little more back pressure with more restictive baffles:confused:

Did you check your shift lever or rear brake peddle for worn bushings??

I had a 94 Heritage that had a similar noise, and it turned out to be worn exhaust head pipe gaskets. I had what appeared to be a solid copper gaskets, and then replaced them with a fiborous metal type. Not sure of the material it was made of, but it had an alluminum appearance. (Funny side to this... A buddy over beers joked that I had bad "muffler bearings"... From that stupid joke I just happened to check the head pipe seals).
The other mystery noise I tracked down was a loose chrome heat shield on the exhaust pipe, it seemed snug when I would check it but I just happened to notice the rattle when I was looking down on a deceleration. I put the heal of my boot on the sheild and the noise would go away! Turned out that the welds holding the clamp was broken on one end, so when I hand checked it seemed tight but loose enough to vibrate one corner onto the pipe.

Just more food for thought for ya.

Thanks guys. I've checked all these things.

Did a lot of work to the shifter linkage, tour open the mufflers, ran with out sheilds, bent those slider things on the rear brake that have a tendency to scrape the rotor, etc. etc.

I am wondering if something is broke in the fuel tank now.

screw it... I got to ride .......... i'm off like a prom dress
