Pinion shaft nut removal

    Anybody have some insight into how the heck I remove the pinion shaft nut off my pinion shaft? I am replacing the pinion gear. The nut seams to be welded on. Is this a shop work deal?

    Thanks in advance.

    I bought a 1981 shovelhead and have not even started it yet. Arggg.

    Help.

    The pinion shaft nut is left hand threads. So if will come off as if you were tighting.

    Thanks I know this, but how to loosen the nut

    I put it in a vice and it scared the shaft, just spun in the vice. I put a vice grio wrecnh on it and again it spun. Is there a secret I need to know about? I want to ride my new bike,.... Help

    Sometimes an impact gun will jar it loose if hit in quick bursts....sorry my only suggestion.:confused:

    Possibly red loctited on very tight, you can heat it with a torch that will cause the red loctite to flow and then you can get it off, or an impact, be sure you have a locking tool to keep everything else from moving.

    Re - Pinion shaft nut removal

    I had this same problem on my recent starter drive gear replacement. Don't know if the Shovel 4-speed primary is the same as Evo, but on mine I couldn't use an impact cuz the nut has that weird rounded shape (not hex). I put the shaft in a vise, with the jaws around the shaft in the area between the tranny and primary seals. That way if it does get scratched, its not in a place where it really counts. Heated it up plenty (not enough to change color, though) with a plumbing torch to melt all the old loctite. Took a few blows with a mallet on the 5/8" combo (in the CW direction) to get it loose. Then when it cooled I cleanned it all up with aluminum-oxide 200 grit and Mother's.
