My oldest son is turning 21 soon, and I'm looking to get him his first firearm. What say you guys/gals about the Kimber Desert Warrior .45 ACP? Worth the extra $?

In fire arms always buy the best you can afford. They never lose value. Kimber is among the best.

Great gift, I'll just pop in a few options,

Kimbers are good, although theres been a lot of
skuttlebutt about quality dropping off over the
past few years. Its a good looking 1911 but there
are an a-load of 1911's on the market and $1600 msrp
puts you in a range with lots of options.

At that price point you are in semit custom 1911 Dan Wesson territory
and I'd opt for a DW over a Kimber all day long.

    Otherwise

I'd look at Springfield Armory 1911's the TRP
fits the bill, Tactical, or the Loaded, all of them are
good fits. More bang for the buck

Or a Ruger SR1911, you can get one full SS for $800
then drop the rest of the money on extra mags, a holster
and 1000 rounds of 45 and come out ahead with a super nice 1911

I agree on the Ruger. It feels great. Looks good to. A buddy has one and loves it. He's put about 500 rounds through it without a problem.

Thanks all. I did the deep background look on Kimber and found that there have been recent issues with their product, and no one seems to trust them at this time (inconsistent quality control, apparently). So I am back to the beginning. Candidates now are the usual - Colt, S&W, Springfield, Ruger, Remington - and also CZ, which has very favorable reviews. Time to go shopping......

Had a Colt 1911 .45 many years ago and it was a great pistol. Don't know anything about the newer '1911s'. Knockoffs if you ask me , even if they are better.
