I am working on a 69 BSA and it has positive ground. The negative wire carries current but is only about 14 guage. Since this wire goes to the ignition and headlights wouldn't it be better if it were heavier wire?

the 14ga wire will handle the current to the acessories............that circuit operates a couple of solonoids.........and they will have the heaver wires..............

it does not matter if its positive ground or neg ground what people fail to know is ground does flow current its just on the return side current lets not forget that current flows onthe outside strands of the wire . best thing to do is voltage drop testing on the circuit if the wire looks good it means nothing load the wire with a seald beam hologen lamp amd check for voltage drop and see what you got . then you will know if the wire is good . if you ohm the wire it dont mean crap cause you can have one strand and have a good ohm reading but you cant flow much current on one strand of wire. the bike is a 69 !!!!!!!!

You can make the wire as heavy as you want but its the amount of current that matters. As long as it is stock and that is the correct size it should be fine. Just be sure there are no cracks or deterioration in the wire.

Thanks for the replies. As far as checking for voltage drop, I do not have a halogen headlight, but I do have electric starter for a riding lawnmower. Would that work for a proper load? If so, how would I hook up it and my meter to test the wires?

That will prob be to much of a load on that circuit. As for a voltage drop you will put the meter on the circuit end and at the begining and you should see no more than a half a volt drop on that circuit .in other words if I was checking the ground cicuit on the head lamp I would put the meter on the batt ground and the head lamp ground turn the head lamp on and if my meter showed 1.50 I have a voltage drop of that value and I'm losseing that voltage to my head lamp on my ground side . If I want to check the positive now ill switch to it and load the circuit and check the same way.
