Well, I think I want to tear my bike down & powdercoat the frame this winter. I think "Bomber Orange Sparkle" would look good with the Kandy Tangerine on the sheet metal. My manual should tell me everything I need to know for reassembly. But... does anybody know a good (easy on the back) way to get the engine out and back in? How much does an Evo weigh, anyway? 20 years ago I coulda probably lifted it out by hand like they do on TV, but not now. I thought maybe I could wrap a sling around under the jugs and raise it up with a cherry picker, then slide the frame out from under it. If anybody has some real-world advise I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

when i have an engine to remove i strap the bike down on my lift. after unbolting it i use an engine hoist with heavy nylon straps to remove it. i remove from the left side of the bike, standing from the rear..........they are HEAVY....dont risk your back........

Man chuck I thought you where going to tell him to just unbolt it tie the frame down & do a karate kick on the left side :roflmao:
I would do as chuck first said cause it's been to long for me to remember , but do think at one time I did just pick it up & out , but that was a long time ago

I saw Arlen Ness install an engine in the frame that way on one of those Biker Build Off shows a couple years ago...had the engine down on it's left side, laid the frame over it,bolted it in then stood it up....He sure made it look easy, but then again he makes a lot of stuff "look" easy to do.

Are you talking about the bike called the "Top Banana?" The engine that went into that bike was huge!!

I used to take MoPar A604 trannies off the jack by hand, but that's probably why everything hurts so much now. I'll try it with nylon straps & a cherry picker, but puttin' it back in might be a trick. If nothin' else I'm pretty good at "redneck engineering".
It's only got 70,000 miles on it, or I'd just take it to my indie shop & have them do the hard part for me and rebuild the engine while it's out.
    Thanks for the ideas...

support the engine from the underside with a jack
prefer a flat top scissor type jack, otherwise when
you remove the mounting bolts it will fall into the frame

The key is to get the bike up to your normal
height and then you only have to lift a few inches
turn around and put on a table of same height.

Make up an engine stand or get one from
JP, Custom Chrome etc, set the engine
in that stand when you take it out...

It's the lifting from a crouched position
where you use your back and not your legs
    to lift that causes problems..

Or get the football player kid
from down the street to help.

    Cover frame with towels
(not the ones from the guest bath)
    to protect it.

When you go to put it back in
    get some pipe insulation from
home despot or low's and wrap around
    newly painted/coated frame to
protect it on the way in...

That's how I did the trannies, standin' up with everything at the same height. Good idea with the pipe wrap. Thanks HRK.

After hangin' out in the garage & tinkerin' on the bike all weekend, I decided to just strip it down a ways and touch up the frame with a rattle can for now. In a couple years she'll probably be ready for a top end overhaul and another main shaft seal anyway, so I might as well do everything at once. I'd rather have a bike lift & the right euipment before I tackle the engine pullin' thing. Thanks for all of your advice, I'll keep it in mind when the time comes.

Don't you have a buddy that can give you a helping hand for 5 minutes??
    That's how I do it.
2 guys + a 6 pack = engine out of frame and in back of van.
Even better yet get 4 hot young chicks in bikinis to do the lifting while you sit back and watch.

Chucktx don't understand, these rich boy's makes their own wheels, and headlights and tractor seats and custom made headlight and spyder webbing and gas tanks. And they have graduated into makin their own custom frames.

Chucktx pulled out the old JPcycles catalog and orders all the frames and gas tanks from it and just assembles everything.
There is a difference when you git a custom built bike.

You need to order the Discovery channel and watch the results of a fine familey doing their thing.
