Primary chain

    How do you know or check to see if you primary chain needs to be replaced? should there be any movment side to side at all?

    the factory service manual has the specs. for the chain.....i cant remember the amount, but it is in the service manual........your best tool in the box!

    Primary chain free play....Evo or Twinkie...5/8-7/8" cold, 3/8- 5/8" hot....until your shoe is adjusted all the way up and you can get within those specs your chain is OK...you'll get a little side play(it's a chain) unless it's way too tight, it's up and down play you check.
    If the shoe is adjusted all the way up and best you can get is 5/8"hot....you're due for a chain within the next 2500-3000 miles.

    We are assuming the bike is pre 07 or 06 if it is a Dyna.

    92 dresser it started to have a wierd knocking or clanking sound my question is now can a primary chain make suck a noise on its own when its ajusted right? the boot is up all the way but the the chain is with in spects.

    the chain could be developing stiff spots..the rollers between the links are worn..yes it can make godawful sounds.....be sure to check the sprocket wear also......

    thanks, I think thats it , when I try to move the chain side to side it feels ruff. I was starting to get scared. lol
